Show rejuvenation OF charleston herald wells nev considerable interest is being manifested in recent mineral discoveries in the old mardis mining district periodically during the past thirty or more years ledges of gold and copper ores have been discovered and people have rushed excitedly into the district located and jumped claims it up for a time and then one by one and in groups have pulled up stakes packed their outfits onto the backs of their burros and left the district without making themselves or the country any richer by their excitement industry or enthusiasm thusia sm that mineral does exist in the district is indisputable and the assertions made by hundreds of practical mining men that mardis would some day with better transportation por tation facilities and cheaper processes for working the ores be classed among the leading producing camps of the state are it is believed incontrovertible about fifteen years ago operations were resumed in some of the mines buildings were abre erected and hoisting machinery was installed A stamp mil of thirty tona capacity was set up and kept in operation for nearly a year it was during this revival that the name of the camp was changed to charleston in honor of mr charles who was general manager of a couple of mines and the mill the ore while assaying from 9 to to the ton was refractory and would not profitably y yield to the process emp employed oyed which caused a general suspension of operations th rought the camp for several years during the recent jarbidge harbidge Jar bidge excitement several prospectors on their way out to the new camp who had bad heard of the existence of the yellow metal at charleston devoted a few days to prospecting in this district with the result of new discoveries an influx of expert mining men and capitalists and resumption of operations in several of the old properties J H walton of alabama AJ and john T burns of colorado springs have bonded the prunty mine one of the oldest and best in the camp this mine consists of a tunnel of about feet which shows a fifteen foot ledge of gold ore assaying 9 per ton this is a low grade proposition but tests made with the cyanide process prove its feasibility the graham mine is again in operation A new shaft has been sunk to a depth of forty five feet showing a four and one half haf foot vein the ore assays essays per ton in gold and copper principally gold A carload of ore will be hauled by teams to deeth and shipped by rail to utah next week work is being rushed on a crosscut tunnel which it is thought will tap the ore at a depth of feet the tunnel is now in feet J H bevans formerly manager for the giroux company is sup intending er the work this mine is now known as the jarbidge harbidge badger and has been incorporated for shares W S eslow of mcgill is president of the company A company comlos composed ed of salt lake capitalists is also working quite a number of miners sinking a shaft on a well defined vein last saturday a couple of prospectors who have been working on a claim about one mile east of charleston uncovered what appears to be the richest gold ore yet found they have sent samples to salt lake for assays essays there are about two hundred people in charleston and the adjacent hills and a hundred more are rushing to the camp from jarbidge harbidge Jar bidge idaho and deeth charleston is fifty miles north of deeth about sixty five miles northwest from wells and fifteen m les south of jarbidge harbidge Jar bidge A stage and freight teams leave deeth for charleston and jarbidge harbidge Jar bidge every day |
