Show FLUXING ORES FOR SHASTA SMELTERS A kennett correspondent of the redding california free press says A return of the prosperous flux ore times in shasta county is press aged ba b the action of the balaklava Balak lala smelter management which within the past few days has made definite arrangements to receive as much ore as certain substantial mining properties can ship in the good news strikes a particularly welcome chord in the old shasta mining district immediately west and north of redding with a southern pacific shipping point at middle creek orders for more ore sent to the gold leaf mine operating close to the railroad at middle creek and formerly the crown deep mine necessitated increasing the force by putting on a night shift at the old spanish mine now being worked under a bond by james sallee and son the order has been increased and several two and four man claims are getting ore on the dumps so that when the roads dry up freighting will become profitable the two largest ore producers the quartz hill and the reid mine both in old diggings are under shipping orders from the mammoth the first named being leased entirely by the company and the latter contracted for almost up to capacity it was these conditions that in the first place sent the balaklava Balak lala afield for ores with which to f lux flux there is no truth in the published reports that bully hill is experimenting with an electric furnace there have been some light experiments along the zinc reduction line in which product the bully hill mine is very rich but the only electrical experimenting that has been done is at heroult where manager D A lyon is carrying out an investigation to see whether he can utilize the hydroelectric hydro electric fluid tor copper smelt ing with copper at 12 12 1 2 cents and strong there is an optimistic outlook for the metal sale this year the larger producers have cut down their furnace output to assist the market and chastas Sh astas small contribution Is of course a factor in the market situation the owners of the bully hill property the general electric seem to relish the shutdown they are apparently long on metal for their supplies as the shasta investment stands them at however the mine is one of the richest in gold and silver and is good for pounds of the red metal per annum when running to capacity and with more precious metal values than are required to pay expenses everything is quiet along the ebelt the growers have their experts testing and the general outlook the past three weeks has been very much better there Is not a third the trouble as formerly and with a few more adjustments at ai the plants the valleys in and around redding and the immediate vicinity of the smelter plants will resume their old time proof of fertility |
