Show WHAT SMITH the mining review received a letter the other day containing a subscription order for one year with enclosure of P 0 order for the writer said 1 I have seen copies of your paper wherever I 1 go in isolated mining camps in arizona I 1 have found it and it is in strong evidence in the mining camps of nevada montana and idaho every number I 1 have seen has been most interesting and now that I 1 have settled down for keeps for a year or so 1 want to get it regularly SMITH of course course we are glad to get the subscription but we were puzzled how to get his proper address on our mailing list smith well we had heard of that name before but what smith was it that valued the mining review so highly it might be hoke smith mike smith of john henry smith and then again it might be a smith with some other name the lord knows but we dont and so we pu the name down on the list as just smith unadorned by any embellishment trusting that he was the only smith in that camp this incident reminds us of a failure on the part of some of our valued exchanges when it comes to giving the full name and full credit to the articles they are so kind as to republish from the mining review with the best of intentions but without regarding the fact that their readers might be interested in knowing what paper the article originally appeared they simply give the credit as mining review now there mining reviews as there are not as many are smiths but there are plenty of them and to simply say mining review is just about as specific as to say journal tribune 9 news or many other titles desin desing 9 bating some newspaper er when the journal tribune news or other publication may be issued in new york london salt lake or san francisco the article so republished may contain such data that the reader might desire to furt furtner lier investigate he might desire to open correspondence with the author of the article of the newspaper publishing it but how can he and all that he can say is what mining review what journal what tribune or what news just as we say what smith the ethics of journalism are not com complied with when full credit is omitted in the republication of an article and in so doing an injury if often inflicted upon patrons and readers the salt lake mining review is pleased to have its exchanges use its columns whenever and as often of ten as they please and especially so when full credit is given we are alluding to publications publication 3 which are abreast of the times but for the paper that cribs continuously and brazenly time is wasted in talking of journalistic courtesy the only remedy for such being to get out the axe and cut its name from the exchange list |
