| Show gold circle alluring to many mining ining men BY WILL C HIGGINS ever since the discovery of tonopah several 1 several years ago nearly every section of the great state of nevada has had its mining 1 1 1 excitement As if tonopah were not big big enough the unrivaled camp of goldfield came to the front with leaps and bounds and since the discovery of this magnificent gold producer other districts of promise and of unquestionable merit have been discovered in the western and northern portion of the battle born state such as fairview W wonder 0 n d e r manhattan bullfrog round mountain seven troughs rosebud and rawhide and last but not least gold circle the attractive camp in elko county into which mining men and investors are now pouring by the hundreds and the golden wealth of whose extensive ledges is raising interest to the fever heat gold circle is situated in elko county in a range of mountains trending northerly and southerly be the bench above midas alidas is the larger town at present business lots on main alain street selling at from to 1500 by the townsite company and residence lots from and upwards business lots in summit are selling at from to and residence lots in proportion lots are twenty five feet wide by feet in depth As the district the altitude of midas is about feet daily stage and auto lines connect the district with the southern pacific railroad at battle Aloun mountain tain and golconda the auto lines making the round trip daily the distance from battle mountain to gold circle is in the neighborhood of thirty five miles and tween the hot springs and rock creek granges ranes ran t es at present there are two towns in the district midas and summit about three quarters of a mile apart the former oc caples a fairly broad and sloping gulch at ithe e mouth of summit canyon to the north F and n d east of the latter lattek which is situated on grows the two towns undoubtedly will be united title to the surface only is given alf all mineral ri rights ats being reserved water at present is supplied to midas by wells and springs in the canyon summit has fine spring water also and a gravity water system will be put in from a mountain stream in the canyon a short distance to the west kinds are obtained at both places while hay and meats are supplied by the golconda cattle company and the ranches of the clover cattle company the former at squaw valley seven miles from gold circle and the latter at clover valley nine miles distant lumber sells at 60 a thousand at gold circle and hay 20 per ton freighters h hauling a u I 1 I 1 n g from the railroad charge one cent a pound at present geology of gold circle from a hasty reconnaissance nals sance of the present developments of the known mineralized area of the dis brict which is about seven miles in northwesterly and southeasterly and from three to three and a half miles in width we find that the new camp is flanked by higher hills capped with basalt the country rock is a porphyry probably rhyolite with intrusions of quartz porphyry accompanied by breccia andesite 7 large masses of por phyra trending northerly and southerly with smaller ones trending easterly e ard westerly stand boldly above aboe AV chef isif fe I 1 and are prominent feature so af mhd district these locally called odysefs are very value specimen ore has gone into the thousands prince photo by will C Hig geins and have resisted erosion to a greater degree than the surrounding mass many any of these dykes are accompanied by quartz veins several small areas of basalt are met with in the district proper but they are only remnants of the caps which once covered the entire district from under the basalt capped lulls hills which IV aich flank the district on oil the north and east the porphyries ries break out and these are a e now being prospected some values having been obtained this may enlarge the district considerably the porphyries ries range in color from a dirty white through pink brick red to a deep brown and in texture from a catli rather soft oft ground mass to a hard lis iron stained quartz porphyry the hills comprising the district have a gradual 9 slope to the southeast terminating in squaw valley and at the north end P nd their sides are rather precipitous but their tops have a rounding and smooth like appearance a nce against the sky line they are cut by numerous canyons gulches and draws rendering easy access and in all the canyons and nd gulches are springs p some of which are quite large the development of the district to date is quite meagre consisting of trenches open cuts and sli shallow hilow shafts the deepest shaft shaf t being some forty odd feet the values are found in the hard compact close grained quartz quartz porphyry in the breccia brec cla and aej in the oxidized iron seams and cooling cracks values range from a few dollars to per ton in gold and silver the ratio of silver to gold being 35 to 50 per cent in the gold is mostly fine and must be panned to show its presence but in some instances it Js is coarse and visible to the eye mosa most all of the gulches will pan and it was from this source that the leads
