distance in the moun tain tam passes I but after midnight the moon came out from behind a bank of i e clouds and nd for the remainder of the Journey the tho marchers had aad plenty of i light As the town of TamaqUa was I entered at 2 a m the strikers began to make as much noise as they could in order to awaken the people veople who I were wore unaware of the t e coming of the strikers The strikers began to protest that they could not be stopped on a public highway and many of them showed a a disposition to resist the soldiers The officer in charge of the troops how however however however ever kept his men in position and the strikers seeing that the soldiers evi evidently evidently evidently dently meant business slowly began returning toward Tamaqua Mother Jones Fones vehemently protested against the action of the troops in stopping the marchers but she was shut oft off of and ordered to move on The McAdoo women had to be almost pushed along so slowly did they walk I They continually Jeered at the soldiers I calling them all kinds of names and threatening them with punishment if they should dare to visit McAdoo It took from 3 8 until after 6 to drive the crowd back to Tamaqua During all of this time the identity of the troops was unknown owing to the darkness and It was reported through the tho crowd that they belonged to the Thirteenth regiment of Scranton ton The he soldiers were really reany members of the Fourth regiment which has haa been sta stationed stationed stationed at ot Shenandoah for three weeks it R of f the left Shenandoah at 1230 a m leaving two companies cT behind Brigadier General Gobin was in iii command On their ar arrival arrival arrival rival at Coaldale Coal dale three companies un under under under der command of Colonel ONeill were sent out ito the south side marchers Three companies were left at Coaldale while two companies under command pf of General Gobin came here Troops In To Pursuit When the soldiers had driven the strikers over ver the mountain one com corn company company pany was sent ent back to Coaldale where the soldiers boarded coal cars and were sent to Tamaqua to So quell any disturb disturbance disturbance ance anee the scattering strikers might stir up there Further along the road a company was deployed to protect a 0 col colliery liery While the marchers were passing K tot and later it was also alsa sent to Tama Tamaqua Tamaqua Tamaqua qua The three companies combined in inthe inthe inthe the latter town and soon oon had the marchers well scattered While all this had been going on the north side marchers had everything their own way in the Nesquehoning valley They reached there after aCter 2 and succeeded su in persuading enough men to remain away from front the Lehigh Coal Navigation No 1 colliery to compel its shut down General Gobin sent two companies of soldiers over there and soon eoon had order restored S Superintendent W D Zehner of the company started to a
