Show F AMUSEMENTS AMUSEMENTS r Checkers with very much the same company C that presented the Blossom play pIa here last season is again at the Salt Lake theatre It opened last night to a but most enthusiastic house The demonstration at the close of ot the third act was especially pronounced In Inthis Inthis Inthis this act Is the really great betting ring scene Last night it was exceptionally well worked out The ring was full tull of life and action It was a very real scene Hans Robert the Checkers of last year has grown Into nto the part until his portrayal is more convincing than ever His tense excitement in the race scene his effort to talk to the girl Intelligently while his whole heart was centered on Remorse the mare that was to bring him wealth or drive him into the deep deepest deepest deepest est depths of Or despair was splendidly done Mr Ir Robert is well worth seeing So Is David Braham jr as Push Miller the tout Never was there a stage tout that so closely counterfeited the real thing as Mr Braham Every Everybody body who has been close to a big bl bet betting betting betting ting ring knows him His slang is the true slang of the course and his humor is genuine The Adoniram Barlow of Joseph Wilkes likes is another feature of the per performance performance There are weak spots In the company compan however In so large an ag aggregation aggregation of players there must be weak spots But they dont spoil the production tion Some of the smallest bits by b the way such sueh as the Gertrude Neville N of ot Miss Mabel Stoughton are very cleverly presented presen ted The moral of Checkers is not rents rent unless It 11 is that it is all right to bet on a horse race if you happen to win Checkers runs through Thurs Thursday Thursday day da night at the Theatre with matinee matineeS Wednesday and Thanksgiving day The good numbers there were on the Orpheum bill last night came too late for real appreciation It was within one minute of 9 before the curtain rose roe and then it rose on The Four Dainty Dancers The alliterative title is about all alt there is to the four all of them liing I ing required to cast one shadow The long thin underpinning with which they the do their dancing is rather lumpy in spots and not any too well arranged but quick enough for the audi audience ence cam to let them pass the entire act consuming only about four and minutes The Colonial which came on very ver late is really worth seeing and incidentally hearing The act is a new one and all seven in it are good The scene is a pretty prett one and the refine refinement refinement ment of the people taking part is in pleasing contrast to the quality pos possessed possessed possessed by some of the other actors Another good act Indeed a wonderful one meIs Is that of Miss Misa Alba whose Reran Herculean Herculean lean feats of ot strength have seldom been equaled on the local boards Watson Vatson Hutchins Edwards Co have an act which brings much laughter and anda a good deal of horseplay at the close clos but which seems to please the audi audience audience audience ence Dixon Anger have ha absolutely absolute no rea reason reason reason son for their act Out West Vest and It will doubtless fall by b the wayside be before before before fore long It has evidently been held together so far by the clothes which are Indian and good as ao far as they go Edward La Vine with his soldier act would be quite a success If he did not soldier His Juggling is clever and he nIght might make a hit with that but by means of the appliances he ho he spins out his act to an extent worthy of a real reni stunt and It grows too tiresome His HI I display of the American flag in bur burlesque burlesque burlesque lesque was quite sufficient to prejudice his audience against him at the first This is a thing thi g the vaudeville audiences are getting tired of and there is a gen general general general eral feeling that it should not be per permitted permitted any more The orchestra played three good num numbers numbers numbers bers and at 1130 11 00 the show was over The Salt Lake Festival chorus had last night one of the best rehearsals in the history of the organization As has been previously announced the chorus Is work workIng workIng working Ing on Sullivans Golden Wedding Evan Stephens and John J T McClellan who were in charge last night expressed themselves as being greatly pleased over the progress made Capacity houses are the rule at the Grand theatre this week while Theodore Lorch is holding the boards in The Unwritten Law The play is a one and Mr Lorch Larch is s living up to his reputation as a capable cap Ie actor Starting with a special Thanksgiving Thank giving matinee Mr Lorch will present an old favorite Sher Sherlock Sherlock Sherlock lock Holmes in III The Sign of the Four Fourr r |
