Show w GUN ALARM TO SAVE LAMBS William Fowler Invents Apparatus to Frighten Coyotes SHEEP MEN M EN INTERESTED I ESTEl If Successful It Will Save Many Thousands of Dollars An automatic coyote alarm has been invented by William Vi iam Fowler an all of the Salt Lake Hardware company and the J D Wood Livestock k company and a number of sheep men the states of Utah and Idaho are interested and nd are backing the proposition Patents have been applied for and the tha machine Is expected to tobe tobe tobe be finished within a month This ma machine machine machine chine is to do the work of a man around a sheep pen during the lambing l season and drive coyotes away It has every appearance of an infernal ma machine machine machine chine and Is operated by a 0 clock but not so dangerous At regular inter intervals intervals vals vain the machine explodes a shot hot gun shell sheIl and serves the purpose of driving drivins driving ing ins away the coyotes that come howl howling howling howlins ing ins about the pens in search of lambs The machine is about ten inches in height and is of cylindrical shape The frame work is composed of twelve bar barrels barrels barrels At the bottom of the machine the shoulder and breech are located for forthe forthe forthe the cartridges which are slipped in from the top tOI of the barrels The barrels contain a firing pin and a I spring which are ure easily removed The clock is set in the middle of the twelve barrels which is about six inches in diameter The clock has but one hand The tiring pins are controlled by a spring and a shoulder which fits tits in a groove and a lever which fits in a groove in the pin When the barrels 18 are loaded the pins are pulled pulle and the lever set in the groove The clock Is IR set in motion and as us the hand moves around it comes in contact with the levers which project out As the hand of or th clock touches the lever a I Ismall small hair spring sprin which controls the lever throws it oat o t of the groove and I the firing pin is released The pin is i driven into the breech and explodes the shell As The hand continues around the dial it comes in contact with the levers and sets the he cartridges off They are regulated to explode every hour The machinery Is 18 simple and Mr tr Fowler says ays that it works like a charm The entire el Uro machine is cov coy covered covered ered with metal sheathing to protect it from rain or damp d mp weather The up ap apparatus is made to hang from the limb of a tree or from three forked sticks so zo o that it can work freely freelS and will vilI not be overturned by the explosion Three of the machines can ean be hung around the sheep pens and the clocks can be regulated so o that a shell can be fired every twenty minutes Experiment Long Under Way The first invention of an alarm was made by 1 J A A Brown who was a sheep sheepherder sheepherder sheepherder herder for many years He afterwards came to Salt Lake and was engaged in photography photograph It Jt was while he was here that he conceived the idea of a coyote coote alarm and had more than manufactured His ma machine machine machine chine was similar to Fowlers auto automatic matic matie alarm He had the shoulder for forthe forthe forthe the cartridges located at the bottom of the machine but the breeching was not complete His Hi machine was made to explode blank shells sheIls Instead of oh fir firing firing ing inK pins he had plungers which filled the barrels and were weighted with lead ead His Hi machine was al g operated oper d by bJ n a dial ana spring The plungers pl were held by a hair hairspring spring and when the dial came into contact with it the plunger was released It fell feU to the bottom of the barrel struck a pin and exploded the partridge artridge After the ma machine machine machine chine had been put in use it was found to be defective The hair springs failed to hold the plungers and the result was when the first shell sheil sh ll exploded the other I plungers 1 b were 55 released and nil all un the I shells went off The shoulders for the cartridges did not work right without a breech Several of the machines blew up and endangered the lives of the sheep herders On one occasion when one of the machines burst into pieces from the explosion a dozen sheep were killed Mr lr Browns experience in the sheep she p camp had made him acquainted with the artifice of the coyote and he could see the usefulness of an alarm The coyote is frightened d away from an at attempt attempt attempt tempt to mix in with a herd of sheep when there are any unusual noises and they fear the explosion of a gun as they do the barking of a dog He bad had been hired in the lambing season searon for years to watch the pens and be being beIns being ing Ins something of a genius he pondered over the of an alarm that would put fear into the coyote and al allow allow allow low the herder to sleep Several of ot the sheep men who are interested in the proposition say that it will mean the saving of thousands of o dollars to them and be just as ef effective effective as hired help if it proves to be bea bea bea a successful enterprise During the lambing season the ewes are divided into small pens and men are employed at 50 a month to watch satch the sheep and drive off oft the coyotes Where a company has several s thousand head of sheep it takes double the force of or ormen men during the lambing season to care for them The machine is now no in the manufacturers manufacturers manufacturers hands In tn the east and the sections are being beins made mude The remodeled remodeled remodeled alarm which has been almost per perfected perfected perfected by bv Mr Fowler hap h ha attracted a great deal of ot attention and several companies are watching the outcome of t the |
