The following has been Bent to ex-Senator Stewart by the commissioner of internal revenue, rev-enue, embodying a decision tbe eflect of which is to relieve all regular stock brokers from taxation as bankers: bank-ers: Sir Referring to the letter ad-di-flssed;;o you on tho 15th ult., relative rela-tive to the proposed assessments against certain brokers of San Francis Fran-cis o who had been reported as liable to internal revenue tax aa bankers, you are informed that seventy. two of said brokers have forwarded affidavits ou the printed forms prepared for tho use of individuals and firms, and that admitting tbe statements sworn to in those allidavitsto be truo, there appears ap-pears to be no ground for assessments on any business done during the past fifteen months in tbe casesof sixty-nine sixty-nine of the seventy-two brokers above referred to, and no assessment will bo mado. Tho affidavits of tbe other three and of still another not on a printed form, will bo returned with leave to amend, as it is believed that certain informalities and omissions noted therein may have been tbe result ol an oversight or inadvertence Green B.
