Show II;i:;iptoii'd L,etslitturo. Columbia, 24. Tho legislature met in session, called by Governor Hampton, and Wallace ot the house called the roll ol members, sixty-nine in number, who adjourned in December. De-cember. Tlio Mackey members wero not acted on. In the senate Chamberlain's Chamber-lain's lieutenant governor, GlcaveB, called tho body to order and retired from the chair, though claiming that ho was entitled lo it. The senate then resolved to 6wear in Simpson, the Hampton lieutenant governor, but Simpson peromptorily declined to bo sworn again, saying he took tne oath last December. The senate then reconsidered that motion and Simpiou took tho chair and made a conciliatory speech. The Laureu3 and Edgefield democrats were then, on motion, sworn, Simpson overruling an abjection to that proceeding, simply saying tho seats were subject to contest. Tno senate now stands, democrats 15, republicans 18, but one of the latter voles with the democrats, demo-crats, and another is in jail, awaiting criminal proceedings. Tho indications indica-tions are, therefore, that Associate Justico Willard will be nominated for chief justice by the domocrats and elected according to Hampton's wish. |
