Show Goss Tablets. Professor Barloot, at the museum, bas received photographs of the Goss tablets, so called because they weru discovered by the Ravereud Mr. Goss of Iowa, and were thus namvd by the academy of sciences in Davenport. They are interesting evidences ol the existence ol a knowledge of writing among the "mound builders." It might prove useful if systematic eflorts were made in exploring the mounds in this region. Heretofore little or no care has been taken in excavating them, aiid the many specimens spec-imens of pottery found have been more or less mutilated. Some small tablets have been found in this territory terri-tory with characters engraved on tihite, but none that we have seen bear such well-defined hieroglyphics ag those found in Iowa. It is hoped that other discoveries may be made that will furnish a key to the written characters. The photographs at the museum are worth looking at by archsejlngical students. |
