Show Another View of the Utah Scare. The Chicago Times expresses the opinion that the current talk about Mexican raids intoTexna and rebellious demonstrations iu Utah originates with speculative persons who are interested, in-terested, as contractors or otherwise, in preventing any reduction in our standing Army. The facU, so far as they can be clearly ascertained, indicate in-dicate pretty clearly that somebody is making a labored attempt to stir up a popular excitement against loth the Mormons and the Mexicans, aud it is more than likely that dilftireut classed of people, actuated by very diflerent motives, are CO operating in this not very reputable business. In the first place, there are the army utlioeri and their friends, who are afraid their occupation will be gone uuless they can foment trouble, or make the public believe there is great danger of trouble, with somebody, either at home or abroad. Then there are the contractors, who are actuated by a similar motive. Nothing No-thing would givo them more pain than a reductiou of the army to ten thousand meu. Nothing would give them more pleasure than a war of sufficient magnitude- to mako it necessary ne-cessary to increase the army, instead of diminishing it. |
