Show THE QUEEN'S PECULIARITIES. Queen Victoria has always been jealouB ol the prince's popularity with the army, and when she reviews her troopB she desiies no one to come between be-tween her ami them. She iB a monarch, mon-arch, and will have no divided allegiance. allegi-ance. The Prince of Wales holds aertain positions in the army which could scarcely have been refused to him, but he has been made to understand under-stand before now that a "royal" review re-view of the troops does not mean a review in which he can take any part. The queen, in fact, means to be the sovereign as long as she lives, and she often ahows that she cares nothing whatever for any remonstrances, criticisms or suggestions that may be addressed to her. Many people think that it is strange to use the German language in the daily intercourse of the court, and to employ Germans whenever a "commission" is given oat for a-picture or a statue. When a statue of King Alfred had to be executed ex-ecuted the other day lor tho town ol Wantago, the queen commanded that the work Bhould be given to her cousin, Count Gleichen, and English sculptors were not allowed to try their hands on the English king. In like manner a portrait of Lord Beacons-field Beacons-field which the queen desired to have was put into the hands of Herr von Angeli, and ihen the picture was Bent to IMeBsrs. Colnaghi, the paint-sellers of Pall Mall, with a command that they should engrave it and pay the Herr a large sum of money for the privilege Messrs. Colnaghi made a wry face, for it is not the first time they have had substantially to pay lor Herr von Angeli's piclurcs and afterwards after-wards find the engravings a dead weight upon their hands. But, of course, they could not refuse. In this case, however, the picture is likely to be a success, for the portrait of Lord Beaconafield is absolutely life like; there iB "nothing extenuated nor aught set down in malice." I have been very glad to subscribe for a proof myself, and expect it to be worth five times as much as the cost price a few years hence. Jennings, N. Y., World. |
