Show THE HJHTAHA. WAR Our latest Montana papers are to1 the 3d of Augubx A dispatch from a committee of Deer Lodge city to the citizens of Helena was to the effect that the Indians in tho Bitter i Root valley were frightened. They had 300 men"mounled and equipped: for a thirty day's campaign. Deer Lodge city had raised $2,000 and 200 1 men in the county and would need $10,000. Helena evidently regarded tho matter as merely a sensational care and replied that the people ol .! Helena would raise both money and 1 men if they really thought the lives and homes of the people of Missoula i were in actual danger; but without n diract appeal for help it would be impossible im-possible to raise either unless Uncle Sam made the call. Southern Montana appears to have been thor- 1 oughly alarmed. Some settlements are sending their families to Bismarck, Bis-marck, which was preparing for defense. de-fense. Our dispatches to-day from Helena show what Howard is doing. It looks ' to one at this distance from the seat of war as if the hostile Indiaus ought to be speedily corraled and punished, but Indian fighting is a myBtery and General Howwd's movements are nometimes incomprehensible. |
