ThiB is the third month in which the departures exceeded the arrivals, the other two being August and September, 1870. There arrived by Bea 1,312, ond departed, 1,118, showing a loss of 230 for the month. The saperiutendent of the free delivery department of the postal Bervice has just made a report which embodies a great deal of valuable information. It includes operations (or tbe fiscal year ending on the 30th 01 June, 1877. From this report we learn that tbe service has been established estab-lished in 87 of the principal cities of the Union, and employs 2,265 men as carriers. During tho year there were delivered by these carrierB 197,375, S47 mail, and 57,017,433 local lettore, 28.905,946 postal cards, and 23,654,-728 23,654,-728 local poHtal cards, aud 87,848,807 newspapers. During the same period there were collected from street boxes 199,566,433 letters, 40,237,597 postal cards, and 30,740,955 newspapers, making the total number of pieces handled 666,563,478. The coat of this Bervice, including incidental expenses, ex-penses, was $1,890,497.85, and the postage on lecal matter was $2,254,-597,83. $2,254,-597,83. J., 4 59-100; and the lowest was at Poughskecpsie, N. Y., 1 87-100. The number of pieces bandied in the cities above named were: Boston, 40,731,324; New York, 146,120,137; Philadelphia, 109,481,-026; 109,481,-026; Baltimore, 18,812,107; Washington, Washing-ton, 7,072,838. In Ibis table Philadelphia, stands highest, New Orleans lowest; the average per carrier in the latter oity being only 139,575.
