Show MR. BLAINE PfiOSTSaTED. Ex-Speaker Blaine, while walking with bis wife from his residence to the Congregational church in Washington Wash-ington on Sunday morning, was prostrated by Budden illness. He complained of severe pains in hia head and soon became unconscious. He was conveyed to hia hou3e, and a number of eminent physicians were summoned. Ho remained in an unconscious un-conscious state until 4 p.m., when he recognized his wife and inquired as to what was the matter with him. Tho diagnosis of the physicians led to the Btatement that the attack was caused by over-excitement of the brain and nervous system, superinduced by recant re-cant events, the disease beiDg aggravated aggra-vated by the effects of the hot weather. It was rather regarded as a case of sun-stroke than an apopleticor paralytic attack, there being n0 symptoms 0f either of the latter diseases. On Sunday night all the symptoms were favorable, and the early dispatches on Monday were to the same effect. At noon, however, how-ever, came the news to the effect that Dr. Pope had ordered the street to be closed to vehicles, and forbidden entrance to the house to all persons, rest being necessary. At 12.80 came bulletin stating that all the symptoms symp-toms were favorable. At 2.35 p.m., it was Btated on the authority of a member of congress lhat Blaine s symptoms were again decidedly unfavorable; un-favorable; that he laid for some time in an unconscious state, and came outin adelirum, in which he talked wildly. Dispatches received on Monday indicated in-dicated that both Bristow and Conk-ling Conk-ling were gaining strength, while Blaine's prostration had somewhat demoralized hia friends. Our latest dispatches will present the lateBt phase of the contest; but it is quite evident that Blaine has been distanced dis-tanced in the race, and will have to be dropped. The Cincinnati party cannot afford to take the risks of his nomination. We have never believed be-lieved that Blaine could carry off the prize, though he stood on Saturday apparently within an ace of winning; but Sunday's work has laid him out beyond power of recovery, and the prospects f the contingent candidates are considerably improved. im-proved. Conkling out of the way, (he is practically not in the race) and Hayes and Wheeler loom up as among the strong probabilities. Bristow is almost as unavailable a Conkling or Morton, having the em-nity em-nity of large numbers who will be influential in the convention. |
