Show The mayor f Gloucester, N. J., in a recent message gives the following reasons for refusing to grant a petition peti-tion asking him to enforce the Sunday law in regard lo the closing of beer saloons. Fint, became the petitioners represent the mir.orily of the inhbi-tant inhbi-tant of tbe cit as one to ten. Second, because it would deprive a largo class of what they consider a religious liberty, wliich would be contrary lo tho onnslitulion of the United Stales. Third, the petition is headed by the name ol I lis predecessor in office, and the mavor aaks why the law was not enforced under his regime. He adds that if any day is more worthy than anolher to bo kept ho y, it is the Sabbath, or last day of tho week. |
