In the Preshyterian general assembly this morning the committee on church erection re ported on Iho overturps from the presbytery at Cvden, Utah, which asks that the nyuembly instruct the board ol church erection to break ever their r.iie requiring a previoui church organization and to muke an exception in the work among the Mormons, Indians and Mexicans on account of the hardships and poverty to which those people are subjected. The committee recommended that tin; assembly decline to act on this overture. over-ture. The report was accepted. Rev. Mr. McMillan made a speech urging the importance of the work among the Mormons. The committee on correspondence reported resolutions concerning the tout hern reconciliation question. A substitute was ollsred to the effect that as the letter from the southern assembly as-sembly in New Orleans preseuta no suggestions not previously considered consid-ered and indicates no deairo to heal the wounds of the post and maintain fraternal relations and manilests no intention to pass over the record except on conditions impracticable, im-practicable, that therefore the assembly assem-bly take no further action. This waB discussed by Dr. Van Dyke and many elb e 1 8, all taking the ground that advance should not be alt on tbe Bidi of the Northern Presbyterians, and Dr. Van Dyke read from the olRcial report of the southern general assembly as-sembly at Louisville, in 1S70, to show that the assembly had spoken harder wcrds of the northern body thau those they complained of. An amendment to the substitute was etlered, which made tbe aeolimeul ! mr conciliatory and the debate I preceeded agaiuon this amendment : Among tbe speakers were the aed ! Dr. Piummer ot South Ctrolina who spoke by request of the assembly and i urged that auy steps necessary to ! fraternal relations be taken, and Rev. 1 Watkina, a missionary to Texas, urged voting down both substitute and amendment. |
