Show AMERICAN FORK. " Gilead " on his Travels. American Fork, Feb. 23, '75. Editors Herald: Since I left tho agroeable society of ! Utah's dignified metropolis on Saturday Satur-day last, I havo been gliding about thia southern country in the beautiful, new coaches of the U. S. R. R., and have not had time, consistent with my other business, to " take my pen in hand" till now. On the the evening even-ing of my arrival here I was complimented compli-mented by a serenade from Capt. Grant's brass band, which is one of the best in the territory, and consists ofjaixteen well trained performers. American Fork is growing; that is I Bhould judge eo from the large number of children who attend the two Sunday schools, under the superintendence super-intendence of Messrs. Wm. Paiman and Isaac Abel. Saturday was a time much fraught with joy to youth; the distribution of prizes made many a little heart beat with ecstacy and delight. I watched them as a beam of sunshine lit up their childish countenances, coun-tenances, on receiving a reward of merit in the shape of a pictured toy-book, toy-book, or a more dignified volume of Bcripture hiBtory; and while I contemplated con-templated the crowded mass of restless rest-less buoyancy, the future loomed up beforo me, and my mind's eye beheld be-held the fathers and mothers of a new generation, the founders of future cities, the builders of elegant temples, and the inheritors of an improved im-proved state of culture and civilization. civiliza-tion. Yesterday I visited Lehi, and in the evening delivered myself of "What Physiognomy teaohes us about the nose." I was favored with asensible and appreciative audience. They have an excellent meeting house, are a nice, genial lot ot people, and seem to prosper under the fatherly care of Bishop Evans, who looks "good for a century." He is now nearly seventy. The Lehites seem to "go" more on commerce than on law, as I noticed their stores, of which they havo two, are both larger than the city hall, and appear to be well piitrouized. Their brass band is excellent. To-night I shall "speak my piece" on the "nose" to the folks of this town, and shall make a few remarks on the same subject, to-morrow night in Provo, under the auBpices of the Lecture association as-sociation of that thriving city. The southern people seem full of life and energy, and I can foresee a bright and prosperous future f jr these settlements. The extension of the Utah Southern and the developments of all classes of mining interests, are destined to gradually but surely paye the road to wealth for the increasing population of this portion of our territory. ter-ritory.
