Show The lures. There waa a very 1 re turn out at (the raced yesterdny, h great many ladir-a beiiig in alttiidaucu. At 2 45 jlhe hurseo wre cailed and prompt y i at 3 they took the track lor a uUr. Both horses looked remarkably well, and the track could hardly have been in better onditioo. "Billy" was awarded the inside position and the horses went cB in fine style, and at a good gait. For the first quarter tney kept well together, but at ihe quarter pole "Countryman" broke, It-ttiog "Billy" ahead, and the leid thus gained was maintained to the close, the time of the heat being 2 43. Beth horses got a good start on the second heat, "Countryman" being only two'thirds of a length ahead and on Ihe ouleide. For the first quarter it would be impcasihle to witness prettier running, and nearly the whole of that distance one blanket would have covered both boree?. "Billy" kept gaining a lilttle alttr tbe quarter pole waa paesed, but just as they were coming in on the first half mile "Billy" broke badly and let "Countryman" take the pole and get quite a lead. He broke again as he started the second hair mile, and it whb thought tbat he could not possibly olose up the gap. But he recovered his feet and kept up a marvtlously good gait, steadily diminishing the space between him and "Countryman" "Country-man" and as he oame down tbe home stretch, he trotted so fast, gained so rapidly, and the impression became so Btrong tbat he would win the beat that tbe crowd broke into cheers, when he again broke and lost. Time, 2.44. "Countryman" took the pole on the third heat. The horses got a fair start but "Billy" having now become "rattled," broke just as he was going out, and again when at the quarter pole. By thiB means ' Countryman" gained about seven rods and kept that distance ahead to the end. Time, 2.44J. In the fourth heat "Billy" broke again just as he started and coming home on the first half mile, "Country man" keeping steady and well ahead, making tbe beat in 2.42. ''Countryman" kept his feet admirably ad-mirably throughout, and when off generally regains himself without losing any time. This was followed by a running race, four horses entering, hallmile dash, two in threo, and was won by "Grey Eagle." Mr. Emory won the race with his tandem team. The first mile was made in 2.50, just $ over the lime he waa to make. Aa he bad three trials, those betting against him began be-gan to feel pretty shaky, and with good cause. The second heat was made in 2.48J. The best tandem time on record ia 2.47, and it will therefore be seen that Mr. Emory haa done remarkably well. On the whole, the day'd eport was a complete success. Tbe best order and good nature prevailed, and there was a pleasing absence of the large audience cutside. It was not as it had been on Bonie occasion! heretofore hereto-fore the larger audience outside the park. |
