Show BRIGH.UI YOLNG ACADEMY. A great mapy p ronB were pree-Jent pree-Jent yesterday to witness the closing exercised of the Brighaoa Young Academy, at Provo, a number ol the ladies and gentlemen being from Salt Lake. The day's proceedings commenced at 10 o'clock with singing sing-ing and prayer. Professor Karl G. Maeser, tbe prinoipal of the academy, stated that the object of the exercises was not todieplay tbe proficiency of the pupils, but rather to exhibit the j method of teaching pursued in tbe institution in-stitution by mettns of the various subjects sub-jects that would be treated upon, and to show tbe proficiency gained by normals in the course of the year's instructions. instruc-tions. The first claea was that taught from the chart, which was conducted by Miea Maria Finch; then followed a Beoond reader exercise, conducted by Mr. Zarah Perry. Next was li claes exercise by Miss Jane Patten, Pat-ten, in which the teacher first read the k'SHOu to the claes, illustrating the manner in which the reading sbnu'd he done. The etudRnls were tac n allowed to make icquiries or give criticisms. After Ibis the exercise was read by the entire clats in concert, until a sufficient degree nl pbrfection had been altaioed, wlivn the students of the cliis3 re. id the exercise separately. A grammar exercise (etymology) by Mr. J. J. Fuller followed, wherein a method waa ahown by which the teacher draws from tbe student a great many truths in regard to tbe subject before definitions or explanations explana-tions are given. Following thia was a grammar exercias in syntax by Miss Mary Friel. This exercises was conducted con-ducted in a manner similar to the preceding; in fact all the exercises were managed on the principle that as little help as possible Bhould be given to the pupils, who should be required re-quired to do as muoh for themselves as lies in their power. After singing, the exercises in the primary Arithmetic were gone through uiith hu Mr .Inhn DaW" nhipfit Ipaann by Miss Eunice Stewart; arithmetic ; exercise (intermediate grade) by Mr. R. Maeser; physical geography by Mr. James Talmage; advanced arithmetic, arith-metic, by J. Olaen. There was then singing by a choir of small children. Prof. Maeser then arose and stated that the examinations this year were more severe than ever before, but Btill tbe result had been most gratifying and after making a few further remarkB on the examinations, the professor criticised the preceding exercises, commending where deserving, and making suggestions where improvement improve-ment might be made. After thiB the diplomas were distributed to the following graduates in the normal department, and at tbe same time remarka were made to each one bb the professor saw fit: Ftrat Grade. Seco7td Grade. D. V. Harris, Monroe, Sevier Co.; Abraham Johnaon, Mount Pleasant; Jtase Fuller, Provo; Maria Finch, Spanish Fork; John M. Daley, Provo. Mr. Olaen thou delivered an address ad-dress in behalf of the normal department, depart-ment, referring to the importance of theology aa a branch of education. Following this were addresses in behalf be-half of the theological clss by Mr. Mayhew Datby; and in behalf of the departing graduates, by Mr. Talmage, Tal-mage, wbo epoke of the good lecling that hod prevailed in the institution during the course of tbe year, the great benefit derived from the instruction, and tbe importance ol the leachor's vocation. The farewell address was delivered by Mr. Reed Smoot, in which the young gentleman mado touching reference to the feelings tbat naturally natur-ally arise on an occasion of this kin d, when old Bohoolmates are about lo separate and teacher and pupil bid each other good-bye. Prof. Maeser then read the statistics giving the number of students in attendance, etc. Tbe report of the principal being long, and the exercises exer-cises having occupied much more time than was anticipated, it waa not read. Alter a lew closing remarks by ihe principal, and by Hon. A. O. Smoot, a member of the board of directors, the exerciees fur the day were closed. Altogether the exercises were of a moat satisfactory character and show that the academy ia keeping pace with the improvements of the limes A ball was given in the evening, and the school will picnio in Provo Canon to-duy. |
