The committee to wait on HfttLiaway, defaulting treasurer treas-urer of the Sagamore and Border City mills, met him this morning, but by the advice of counsel, he refused to make further disclQeure. This determination de-termination is a grtat disappointment to the directors, who rxpected to find Hathaway willing to straighten out the afUirs of the corporation. Hathaway proposed to take advantage of all legal technical it tea to escape criminal indictment. Ghace will doubtless take ihe same course. Obace claims that he received ot Hathaway but a comparatively small amount and that through his duplicity and prevarications he had involved some of hiu (Ohace's) best friends. Banks in various cities holding irregular irre-gular notes have sent officers here who are making attachments. Providence, Provi-dence, New Bedford and Boston banks will suffer most severely, and some of the Fall Eiver banks are probably involved. At a meeting of the directors, this morning, Hathaway resigned the treasury i hip of the Sagamore and Border City mills. Joseph W. Wad- leigh was elected olerk and treasurer pro tern, of the Border City, and John Brown clerk and treasurer pro tern, ol the BagRmore. Efforts will be made by the still solvent and honestly managed man-aged corporations to maintain their hold upon public confidence, and to this end measures will be taken to reduce their indebtedness by an increase in-crease of capital stock. The directors direc-tors of the Da vol mills decided to call a meeting of stockholders 1'jr May 1st, when the capital Block will be increased from $270,000 to $300,000. Chace, this morning, stated regarding the reported confession uf Hathaway, that he (Chace) had received $300, 000 of the money, "I have not had one dollar from Hathaway in three yars, exceptini $10,000 that I accepted ac-cepted at ; his anxious solicitation a few evenings before my downfall. When I informed him of the circumstances circum-stances hanging over me ho replied, 'If you go I must go also,' and finally begged me to take the money." his sizs. Tiffin, O., 23. O. 0.
