An immense crowd of strangers - are in the city to-day to witness the ceremonies attendant at-tendant upon the -unveiling of the : statue of Lincoln at Oak Ridge Ceme-'try. Ceme-'try. The members of the booiaty of the Army of Tennesee, which held its annual reunion here yesterday and last night will participate in ths ceremonies and among the distinguished disting-uished persona present are President Grant, Vice - President Wilson, General Sherman, Senators Logan and Ogleiby, Generals Custer, Giles A.. Smith, McClernard and others. ,The procession formed at 11 a.m.,-Gov. a.m.,-Gov. Beveridge, of Illinois, acting as Grand Marshal, assisted by numerous aids. President Grant, with Seorctary Belknap, occupied a barouche at the head of the procession, preceded by the miliiary band from -, Newport barracks and escorted by the Gov eraor's guard, a local rniliUry company com-pany as a guard f honor. Following came carriages containing Generals McDowell and Custer and Hon; J. R. Dubois with Mrs. Grant, Rev. Dr. Pale, an old friend of Lincoln, with-Bishop with-Bishop Way man of the African Methodist Meth-odist Church, Vice President Wilson ,. with Sir F. F. Curtou, M. P.v and; W." P. Foster, M. P., of Enlaud Senator R. J. Oglesby, orator of the day, with Rt. Lincoln, son of the do- J ceased President together with an almost al-most interminable line of carriages with citizens. The Society of the Army of Tennessee marched on foot with Gen. Sherman at their head, and . a large number of military and civic societies followed. Arrived at Oak-Ridge Oak-Ridge Cemetery, the baud played the dead march and Bishop Wayman made a fervant and eloquent prayer. A chorus of singers then chanted, ! "With malice toward none, with charity for all," and the statue was then unveiled. - . , - Hon. J. K. Dubois then read a historical his-torical sketch of the organization and labors of the Lincoln Monument-Association, showing that the monument monu-ment is finished and paid for: that, means are provided for the completion comple-tion ol two of the fourgroupes of stat-uaiy, stat-uaiy, representing the infantry, cav-' airy, artillery and marine branches of the army, which are to be placed at the four corners of the monument, and that thero ave assurances 'that the other two will also be provided lor. In conclusion, the ipeaker said the members Of the association congratulate con-gratulate the artist upon the success which has crowned his efforts to give a faithful rendering of the face and form of the beloved dead, whose remains re-mains rest benenth this monument. Every member of the association was a neighbor of President Lincoln, and most of them had known him intimately since his early manhood. It is their unanimous opinion that Lb n statue is a truthful likeness and will serve to give to future generations a perfectly aoour-ate aoour-ate conception of Abraham Lincoln. Here ends what has been to members of the association for almost ten years a labor of love and duty by the liberal contributions of a grateful nation. We have been enabled to provide a suitable place for the remains re-mains of one of the wisest and purest men known to our national history. There may they rest in pence. Ex-Governor Oglesby then delivered an eloquent oration, at the conclusion conclu-sion ot which the benediction was pronounced and the vast assemblage, numbering not less than -'1,000 persons, per-sons, quietly dispersed. |
