HOUSE. Maynard reported a bill to amend the several natioual currency acts and to establish free banking. The House refused to recommit the bill to tho committee as Maynord wished, and it was finally sent to the Committee of the Whole, with the understanding that it would be called up for discussion discus-sion in two weeks. Maynard also introduced a bill limiting lim-iting theamount of U. S. notes in cir-1 cir-1 culation to four hundred millions.and allowing their exchange into convertible convert-ible 3.-1O-I0O bonds. . Referred to the Committee of the Whole. Maynard reported adversely to the Savings Banks bill, and up the expiration expi-ration of the morning hour the House went into Committee of the Whole on the army appropriation bill, and Co-burn Co-burn finished his argument in favor of such a reduction of the army aa the bid contemplates. Hawley, of Conn., favored a well considered bill to reduce the army after a systematic maimer. Randall concurred in the argument argu-ment as to the necessity of protecting the frontier against Indians, but for that purpose troops could be withdrawn with-drawn from the south, where they are now used tor Die purpose of crushing out the liberties ot the people. After further discussion without reaching a vote, the committee rose and the House took a recess till evening. The evening session will be for tlie consideration con-sideration of the codification act. |
