Show City Council- Meeting of the City Council, Tuesday Tues-day evening, Mayor Wells, presiding: presid-ing: Petition from Henry Smith and fifty-three others, asking that the nuisance of Chinese wash-houses on the principal streets of the city bo abated. Referred to the City Marshal. Mar-shal. Petition of Septimus Scars and 1.184 others, resident of the north bench, Twentieth Ward, representing that they wero obliged to carry their water for culinary purposes from one to twelve blocks, and in somo cases had to purchase it; that much of the water which had to be used was filthy and stagnant; that the petitioners had dug lorty-eight wells, at a cost of , 162.44, ami constructed two ditches at a cost of $4,000, and yet jhad not obtained water conveniences; that they had employed a surveyor who had run a level ana ascertained that a ditch 0,000 , yards in length from a point . a short distance east of the Empire Mill, City Creek, could be constructed tor 600. and that such a ditch would bring a large portion oi tho city within water limits; and asking ask-ing that tho petitioners be granted the privilege of digging such a ditch, or that the city construct the same, and that the petitioners be permitted to use the surplus water of City Creek. The petition was referral to a special committee, consisting of Aldermen Sharp and Croo, and Councilor Little. Petition of W. J. Hooper and fifty-threo fifty-threo others, asking that in consideration consider-ation of the combustible material of which the buildings on Commercial street are constructed, a water-tank be nlaced on that street. Granted, and the tank was ordered constructed under the direction of the Street Supervisor. Report o( Alderman Clinton for the month ending July 31st, was received re-ceived and placed on file. The report snowed that during the month 162 cases had been tried by the Alderman, Alder-man, $1,100 in cash fines had been assessed and collected, and S3iU.50 in labor fines. The Committee on Claims, to whom was referred the last monthly bill of tho city marshal, reported that the same was correct, and recommended that th amount to settle the bill, J 121.65, be appropriated. Report adopted. Bills of Utah Central railroad company com-pany for lumber and nails, used in repairing streets, amounting to $14, were received and referred to the Committee on Claims. Bills of U. S. Marshal and clerk of the Third District Court, amount-ling amount-ling to $21.60, for oflicial services in the case oi Salt Lake City. H. A. 1 Moirow et a., were received and amount appropriated. The proposition of O. Ludwig, concerning con-cerning the erection of lightning rods on the City Hall, was referred to the committee ojimprovements. The board of examining physicians reported that they were ready to enter en-ter upon their duties of examining applicants lor certificates to practice medicine and surgery in the. city. Council adjourned till next Tuesday Tues-day evening at 7 o'clock. |
