Show INSURRECTION OF FANATICS. New York, 18. A Brazilian letter says that in Kio Grand do Sul an insurrection in-surrection exists owing to the fanaticism fanati-cism of a sect of zealous German colonists col-onists of St. Leopold, led by one Maurer,- who professes to bo a prophet. pro-phet. His wile, Jacoba, is supposed, by his votaries, to be the savior of the world, and that his uncle is an apostle of Judas, who sacrificed himself him-self to bring about the Bible prophecies prophe-cies in relation to the death of Christ. The turbulenco and fanaticisms of this sect were such that tho authorities authori-ties had Maurer, his wile and uncle arrested; but Maurer was released. After Lhe release of Maurer, the house of a seceder from the sect was attacked attack-ed and burned and his wifo and children chil-dren were shot, the man being absent. ab-sent. When the police appeared they found Maurer and his sectaries, some 300 strong, cutrenehed iu a mid.-forest settlement and, although a force of regulars was brought up, the soldiery were repulsed with a loss of live killed and thirty-five wounded. At last dates the troops aud national guards were being collected and cannon can-non were bombarding the position. It is said that the revoltcrs have massacred thirteen families of sccctlers and lukewarm sectaries. |
