A tew , montlis ago, items in the newspapers beaded "another big thing," "the richest discovery yet,"' "(Jomstock eclipsed,'' and w forth, were as plentiful as "blackberries in July," ana had a person croiiittd all the fabulous htories about mines which were told both hero and ubroad, he 'would have believed this country far j exceeding in wealth anything ever beforo known or even dreamed of; ! and such stretching of facte and loud tinting with word colors baa been observed in the early dnye of even-one even-one of the western mining regions. But now we trust the country has outgrown the desire to have their eyes dazzled by these gilded nothings, and their ears tickled by these improbable impro-bable stones of wealth, and truly 4.ud earnestly du v.-e hope to see and hear no more of them. What our mining capitals have uo'.v turned their attcntbn to is the development and working of the mines. True, this season has been flj dull one, and comparatively little lias j been accomplished in comparison I with what would have been done had a di tie-rent state of a flairs existed and business everywhere been more active; ac-tive; but steadily and quietly the substantial work has been prosecuted prosecut-ed on what arc known to be paying mines: and when the year closes we doubt not the value of the season's , out-put of ore will double that of any I previous twelvemonth. Tiie number of miners employed this year will net equal that of last, by considerable. The reason of tnis is simple: Where last year numbers of "jiro-pects" were being opened, and -much "dead" work bcii'g done on speculation, this yc.ir uw, except p tying propirti-v, arc employing haiuls.lhcrefui'c th'j former form-er popular beneficial ctVocts of mining the wider distribution of money have not been lxci;. And again, the profits arising from working the mines pass through regular regu-lar channels into the pockets of the owners, and aic not scattered and 1 displayed as previously to bo noised about. Jlining in Utah is fast becom ing what it is m outer districts a definite, de-finite, settled business, and not an airy uncertainty, unreal and flighty. Thus, not hearing the beautifully improbable im-probable stories, and the noise ol great discoveries, leads the uninformed unin-formed to believe the mines are "petering;" "pe-tering;" in our opinion euch persons are, however, entertaining an erroneous errone-ous idea. The mints we do not mean "prospects" "pro-spects" were never more flattering in appearance than they arc to-day; aud scarcely one which has been" established as worthy ttie iiamo of mine, but is as rich or even richer, both in appcaraccc and actual pro-duclivcneis, pro-duclivcneis, than ever. We need but point to a few of the chief ones to confirm what we gay of them. The FlagsLiir in Little Cottonwood; the WinaniiK k and Galena in Bingham; the Mono, Chicago, Flav'dlo, in Dry Canju; the lie Henry, Ontario and FlagslalVin Parley's I 'ark, arc all appearing ap-pearing better at the present time than they were hist year, aud others could bo named which arc in the smie gratifying state. A full investigation inves-tigation of the whole subject will show 1 that the mining interests of Utah is in a healthy condition, and themincs very far from "petering" out. |
