Show LET I EI. I'KOM DUY CANON. 'LVrr.-(oi:-ii-ce '- li-tiL;.) Dr:Y Ca.son, Aug. -"'th, lt7;. Altera -i!' nee Of two week-s wr.-tion wr.-tion I find I have eolleeud items enou.'h to form a basis up. hi wiueh to CMiL-truet a letter. Tlie camp continues lively, large qtiantili'-s of ore l in- shipped daily t,. the Chi. -a co S. M. Co.'s smelting ' works, at Ku-li Lake. Tins eom-panv eom-panv have built the linest smelling works that I have seen in Utah. Tlie tramway running from the Chicago mine down the canon a mile and a half, w-.rks like a charm, and Mr. ' Hen. Hampton informs me thai the Chicago will produce eighty tons of ore daily; and the ten-horse jmwer s-team eiuiine. now being put up in place of the whim, will greatly facilitate facili-tate the delivery uf ore for trausorla-liun trausorla-liun over the tramway. The Kveuing Slar improves every I dav, and this week delivered at the smelting works three hundred and fifty sacks of high grade oie, and will double that amount next week. ' The eompanv is making preperaf.on for putting "up a ti r.-t-clu.-s whim. When it is I'uuslud thev expect to send oil' thirty ton of first-class ore per week. The Cadot, ownul by the same company, holds its own well, and lias every appearance of making one of tlie best ore-producing mine-; in this camp. Tue company are pushing tbnvard the work of development with commendable alacrity. This mine produced twenty-two tons uf ore in two weeks, working but three men, the ore being worked at the Chicago works. The -Mono mine keeps up its-reputation by shipping large qtiauliiics of; rich ore" to the city, where 1 under- j stand it is purrhasul by eastern parties par-ties and sent to the rcihiing works at Chicago. The Iris, commonly known as IhJ Kearsarge, continues to produce very rich ore in large quantities. This ore goes to vour cilv also. The Yankee Doodle has not been working for some time, but has certainly cer-tainly nut shut down because it lacks ore to work on, as it is well known in camp that it has as line, a li-dy uf ore as any mine in tlie canon. ThcPaohekeo and Magnolia, owned by the Granger Bros., continue work-ingwilh work-ingwilh as line prospects, ahead as, any person could wish. There is a rumor ru-mor in camp that these mines have been consolidated with the Mono, hut there is nothing definitely known about it. The tiucen of the Hills is lying still, with as fine a show for a big mine as ever was seen in Opnir district. Uhe cause given is a reported sale on hand. A new prospect has been struck by some parties here on Mahogany Hill, with some of the richest horn silver and chlorides that have ever been heard of. Assays running from l.oOO to 4,000 have been obtained from this prospect on the surface. The town and the denizens thereof arc in a prosperous condilio'J. The merchants, hotel keepers, ctc.f fee! cheerful over the reported dull times elsewhere. Of visitors we have a fair share, there being several parlies nowhere looking around lor safe investment in-vestment of surplus funds. The weather has been unusually cold and stormy, so much so that we have come to the conclusion that the ! clerk who superintends that article j must have resigned or have been indulging in-dulging in opium. Of that rumor we Imvp be:n-d mid hnlievn it tn bo im- true. Our reasons, therefore, are as follows: He (the ollicial) has the reputation re-putation of taking several thmgSjSueh as stock-gin cocktails, checks, brandy straight, and whiskey crooked (else why such crooked ways), and we, in charity, must believe that he cannot take everything. By the way of taking tak-ing things, a Chinaman took a terrible terri-ble pounding here, last week, for drawing a six-shouter on a white man, and consequently left these parts, complaining that the "Meliean man too much like to iightce." Some of the demi-monde, ;'who have heretolore rested secure under the wings of so-called justice," have visited 'this place with a view lo a permanent residence. After a twenty-Jbur twenty-Jbur hours' stiy they concluded that tlie camp was unhealthy, and meandered mean-dered down the canon on their way o parts unknown. Justine. |
