About a quarter past four this morning a policeman noticed a tiro bursting through tbe roof of Barnum'a circus directly over whfrfi tho oirafTes Wflrfl kent. and im mediately after the animals and birds began howling and sarccching in a terrific ter-rific manner. The alarm wai soon sounded, but tho flames spread with such rapidity that almost before the firemen oould get tho water on Barnum'a Bar-num'a circus was a thing of tho past. The firemen report the roars of tbe animals frightful during the short time they lasted. Two elephants and a camel were tho only animals saved. W hen these wore led out by the keepers they were given large spaoe by the orowd witnessing the fire, although the animals wero very docile considering tbe excitement on all sides. The front of the building was two stories, and composed of nearly, or altogether, corrugated iron and wood. Tho structure burned, however, as though it was a tinder box. The firemen and others were unable to stand within a hundred feet of the burning building, the heat was so intense. Tho windows of the Academy of Musio were scorched and broken in with tho heat, the doors were blistered and the bill boards in front of the Academy were burned on the side towards the oircu?, and there were .great fears for the Academy's safety. Nothing could te done -to suvo uny animals, Graco chapel was wholly consumed only tho front walls being left standing. The wind caused the fire to extend aoross Thirteenth street, destroying on its way the largo carriage manufactory of S:evens & Co. and several private dwollings. The fire next spread to tbo mansion of Mrs. Lawrence, consuming it, and then to the iron front building occupied by F. Grote, ivory dealer, which, with a rear building occupied by the same, was quickly destroyed: ; and thenoc spread to Miner & Stevens carriage factory on Thirteenth street, the rear portion of which burned, with $30,000 worth of oarriagee. Curlay's oarriago factory, adjoining, was also slightly damaged. Barnum's losses are variously estimated from $200,000 to $300,000. Barnum is said to bo in New Orleans. Tbe loss to Lawrence is $'20,000, alt insured. Groto's loss is S30.0000, insured for $20, 000. Heed & Co., varnish dealers, deal-ers, lost all their fixtures and stock, ilemworth, manufacturers of piano strings, lost a.l their stock. Thousands Thous-ands of peoplo visited the ruins during du-ring the day, and a largo lorce ef police po-lice was on duly to keep the Grcmcn from being impeded in their duty. It is reported that Barnum's iuaurance on the animals was only twenty-five thousand dullars. |
