Show PRESIDENTIALLOO RO LLIKO Tho following is from tho Washington Washing-ton oorrrospoudenoo of tho Chicago Tribune of tho -Ith inst: The l'rcsident was at tho Capitol to-day for tho purposo of urging upon tho members of both houses of congress con-gress tho necessity of taking sowo decisivo action this session upon the Utah question. Uo held consultations with members of both tho house and souale judiciary commi'tecs.and stated that ho had been petitioned by a vast number of tho inhabitants of Utah to not only guarantee tUeiu tho iij-ual constitutional protection, but to afford them tho rights which properly attained at-tained to American citizens. Tho I'resideut intimated that he could immediately im-mediately scud eongrcss a special message calling for legislation ou this Bubjeet. If I'resideut Grant chooses to step dowu from the hight occupied by the chief executive of this great country, to log-roll a pet measure of tho Utah "ring" through congress, wc have uo particular objection; aud if wo had, it wouldn't make any ditferouco. But we do protest against tho statement that ho has been "petitioned by a vast number of tho inhabitants of Utah" as eet forth. He may have received some such petition, and it may have had aDy quantity of names from three to three thousaud to it; but should the commission com-mission talked of a couple of days ago bo appointed and come out to Utah, it would find this "vast number" would dwindle numerically as rapidly as Falls tatTs foes increased, and on tho saiuo principle. |
