Show Court Martial at Camp Douglass. Doug-lass. A departmental court-martial convened at Camp Douglas yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, consisting of the following officers, viz.: Lieut. -colon el A. G. Brackett, 2nd cavalry; major J. O. Dewey, pay department; major J. V. Du Boie, 3rd cavalry; captain A. L. Hough, 13th infantry; captain E. D. Baker (absent); captain D. S. Gordon, 2ad cavalry; capt H. E. Woyes, 2nd cavalry; captain G. A. Hull, Q. M. department; captain W. A. Jones, engineers department; major H. B. Barnham, J.A., U.S.A., for the trial of captain Philip Li. Elliu, of the 13th United States infantry, stationed here. The charges preferred are : 1st Conduot to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, in violation of tho 99th article of war. 2nd. Disobedience Disobe-dience of orders, in violation of the 9th article of war ; and 3rd, Conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman, in violation of the 83rd artiolo of war. Tho specifications are that on Sunday morning, December 1, 1372. at the inspection at Camp Douglas, one of his men was very drunk and unfit for duty, and that in a moment of excitement excite-ment the captain struck him. The court sat six hours yesterday, and will probably finish the evidence to-day. As the military reoord of captain Ellis is absolutely spotless, and as all his habits aro those of a good soldier and a perfect gentleman, his friends will watch with deep anxiety the result re-sult of this trial, and pray for his safe deliverance. The accused is defended by George C. Bates, Esq., United States district attorney of Utah. |
