Cedar Spri.no, Feb. 17, 1873, Editors Herald You will perhaps bo surprised to hear from mo at this place, especially in this season of '.ho year. Y'ou may well say that the fool killer bad neglected neg-lected his duty in this instance. Tho trip was indeed a hardship, worthy of the Darien explorer; Napoleon on the Alps, or Washington on tho Delaware; but after our little party of fortuno hunters had started, nothing but the cud of the trip found favor. On last Monday, 10th inst., we rolled out with two teams aud camped for tho night two miles this side of Grantsville. On Tuesday we traveled over thirty miles to Cook's camp, at Lako Side district, without good water and through many miles of slush over Skull Valley, which added many pounds of mud to our feet I at every stcy. On Wednesday we traveled about twenty miles in the fa.'e of a genuine nor'-wester, which made us thiuk often of the comfortable comfort-able quarters wo had just left. Thursday Thurs-day morning wo experienced a storm which forbade tho baking of bread, so coffee straight went, but had a weakening weak-ening effect for an all day walk. That evcuing brought us to an extensive desert, or siougu, in signt oi toe place of our destination. On Friday we traveled across this "McGuglan" slough, a distanco of fully twenty miles, partly through six inches of snow, and about six miles of water and sluh a more tired set of "honest miners" perhaps never met on a foi-eigu foi-eigu shore. On Saturday the miners of tho district met and named this Newfoundland district, and elected John Frank recorder; and have certainly cer-tainly passed a code of very wholesome district rules (a copy of which I will procure and scud you). By tlio above you will notice that we are online west side of Salt Lake, io Desert mouncaio, about seveotj-fivo seveotj-fivo miles from lirantsviile, and we think about twenty-hve miles from the 0. P. raiiroad, in Box Eider county, I" tab. Several of our party will prospect pros-pect for the railroad in a few days when 1 will bo able to report further on that subject. Many good copper led ires have been found, which also carry silver and galena, and perhaps gold. The following are the names of tew lo'les located: Sanoige. L"ag;e Bird, Mam mouth, Great Western, Look-out, Great Republic, Silver-chamber, Silver-chamber, Mountain Sheep, Plymouth, Jebos Oregenian. Geni, Snow-.-torm, Mounrain Chief, Franks, Crown Point, Don, Oriental. San ford. Nellis, Storm King, La.-t Chance, Telegraph, etc. Assays have run as high as tony-two per cent in copper, and $d7 in silver, wcieh is certainly encouraging, Hav- , inc been too busi y engaged in fixing camp, i have not vUited the mines, j but shad do so in a few days, and when i I have an opportunity I wiii write ; more feliy; aod aiso send you a sample i of the ore. Bat very little prospecting I bas been done, and trom appearances 1 this wiii be a ticn aud exteo-ive camp. Dar CAYOJt. J |
