Show l-O "V UKADE ORES PROFITABLY WOHUED. Much attention has been directed during tho past few years in bringing scienco to boar, whereby low grade and rebellious ores could be reduced at a cost that oould render the working of less valuable mines profltable. Mr. S. F. Ambler, a gentleman of many years experience in the reduction of the various sulphurct ores of California ! and Nevada, has Anally combined scv-! scv-! eral essential points, so that tho desid-i desid-i cratum has been obtained. The invention in-vention to which we refer has cost him considerable timo and labor in experimenting. experi-menting. Mr. Ambler has assooiatcd himself with a gentleman of this city whose theoretical research and encouragement encour-agement enables the former to present to tho mining interests Ambler's Compound Com-pound Blow-pi po Furnace. It is a a roasting furnace for the treatment of rebellious ores. The main principle, princi-ple, and that which renders it superior superi-or to all others hitherto used, consists in driving a stream of hot air, which has not lost its oxygen by combustion, into tho ore in a revolving cylinder, thereby thoroughly oxidizing the sul-phurcts sul-phurcts instead of mcltiog or cementing cement-ing them, as is f requently done by other furnaces. Usually tho oxygen of the air is nearly all con sumcd in passing through the lire, leaving an iusutiicient quantity when it reaches the ore. to support the combustion com-bustion of the sulphur and oxidize the base metals contained therein; result inc. when highly ciiarced with sulph-urets, sulph-urets, in the imperfect reduction or decomposiiion of the ore under treatment. treat-ment. This furnace is arranged to rcgulato the supply of oxygen according accord-ing to tho proportion of sulphurets in the ore. Any kind of fuel may be used, not excepting sagebrush or sawdust. The wood is fed into a closed chamber near the top, and is thoroughly charred by the hot air ind gases from below the latter being economized and used in promoting combustion. It will roist from one to two thousand pounds per hour, according to tho percentage of sulpurets in the ore, and consume from one to three cords of wood per day, according to the same condition. The cost (labor and fuel) will not exceed ex-ceed $4 per ton. It can also be used as a smelting furnace for ores in a fine state of division, sueh as are generally treated in a reverbatory furnace. 1 he patentee claims great saving tn structure, struc-ture, labor acd feel, and tha'. it accomplishes accom-plishes more wrk rhac any furnace in use.
