Loring temporary president, and George Merrill, secretary. secre-tary. On motion of general Butler, the galleries were thrown open to the public. An immonso crowd was present. A committee on credentials . was appointed in accordance with the j programme previously laid down. Ex- ! ! attorney general Hour, and Hon. II. L, Dawes were greeted with trcmend- j oub applause. Dawes moved that I delegates be admitted lo act who bear i 1 credentials from regular city and town , Republican committees, until the con-I con-I vention act upon the claims of such delegates. His speech in support of the motion was followed by Butler in ; the negative. Considerable excite-. excite-. meut and disturbance occurred when j Butler took the platibrn, cheers, hisses j and groans being mingled from Ihe lioor and gallery. A motion was made, when Butler's speech concluded, to relcr his motion. The matter waa considered mainly on the question of strength of tlx opponents of Butler, and great interest was taken in its discussion. The motion to refer was finally carried. |
