Show SELECTED. IRON CITY, UTAH. From George W. Artiold, wlio rc-tnrDed rc-tnrDed last Thursday from a visit to Iron City aod vicinity, we learn the following iu regard to matters aud tbiugs in that section of Utah: Iron City is situated about seventy-five miles due east from Pioche, and its principal business, as its name indicates, indi-cates, is in the smelting and working of iron. A large mountain containing immense masses of iron sulphurats is close to the town, and from this U obtained ob-tained all the ore reduced. A fine coal mine, which produces coal of a superior quality, is also close to town, and wood and water can be obtained in ; abundance. A fine Emelting furnace has been in full blast lor some time, and a lage brick foundry is beiog pushed rapidly toward completion, and will commence operations in about two weeks. The iron mine and reduction works are under the su perintendence of Mr. S. M. Blair, a whole-souled, liberal-minded Texan I gentleman, by whose indomitable will, perseverance and energy matters in the vicinity have been brought to their present prosperous condition. Five miles north of Iron City is an immense silver belt, where quartz and silver veins abound, the top rock from which assays from $30 to $150. The ground in ibe vicioity of tho mines is claimed by the Mormons principally, but as yet tUey have done no work on the silver mines, having heretofore paid all their attention to working in the iron mines. Water and wood are plenty near the silver ledges, and the country has no indications of ever having been visited by prospectors or miners. In returning, return-ing, our informant went as far south as St. George, where the crops are extremely ex-tremely poor, on account oi the long continued drouth which has prevailed in that section during the present season. sea-son. North of St, George the crops have been almost completely destroyed by tho grasshoppers, whose depredations depreda-tions can be plainly traced for miles and miles on either side of the road. Mr. Arnold will return in a few weeks to look after his interests tsra.Ely Record. |
