Show Bv Hook or Crook. There appears ap-pears to bo no want of an origin tor this proverb. In the great fire of London Lon-don many boundary marks were destroyed. des-troyed. This in consequence of many disputes as to the siies of diftereni properties, had a tendency to hinder the rebuilding of the city. In order to escape froai the delay, it was decided to appoint two arbitrators, whose decision de-cision should be final in all cases. The surveyors appointed were a Mr. Hook and Mr. Crook, who gave so much satisfaction in their decision? that the building proceeded rapidly. From this circumstance comes the saying, "Hy hook or by crook." |
