The wealth di lived IV. dii it is gone, and the .source ol' that wealth isyone, and what remain? II' a man owns a mine that yields him a profit of a hundred dollars a day for a thou-.ind days and is then exhausted, what is his position at the end of that time if he has sent his money oil' over the earth to minister to erowiu vaniiie-? lint if with the returns re-turns from that mine he has invested well and wisely in manufactures, or if his money has lu en placed at interest whole Mieli industrial development could he aided 1 y it, then) has lecn genuine good wrought by it for the place where and the people among whom he rc.-iJcs. M'hen the mines of Utah bring as steady and handsome returns as they will ever do, is the time for the peoplo of Utah to give most solid and closest attention to manufactures, not of one kind merely, but of every practicable kind, that will supply home demand and meet the wants of an outside market. We have advocated the erection of .separating and refining works here, because we desire to see lead manufactories manufac-tories established, and we have not yet heard one argument .igainst the feasibility feasi-bility of this that others HU ally strong might not be brought against woolen manufacture in Utah and yet it is an uiuiuestioned success, (still, though a success-! it needs encouragement, until Utah woolen fabrics wi'd be sought after as those of California and Oregon Ore-gon now are. We hope to see extensive wo.den factories fac-tories and cotton factories established, the culture of silk become a lucrative industry in-dustry of the community, iron foundries and machine woiks, furnaces, mills, separating and retinitis works, lead works, li'e and cutlery establishments, and other sources of industrial wealth, all existing and prospering in these valleys within a few years; and with those, with every avai'able acre of land under cultivation, with a large and prosperous population, ar.d with Salt Lake City the great interior mart ol the west, who wi'.l be able to say that Utah is not a rich, a prosperous and a powerful State ? l!ut this wi'.l rover be reached by sending out of the Territory a'.l the tnouey that cotr.es into it. |
