H1K MINK IS W'iKKKIl From Lo'iow, from the level of a tunnel f. ot in I. -neth which cuts the main ore del"j-lt eleht leVebs, or about eighty j feet. b. i w the bottom of the discovery I or Voodman shalt. As the ore from 1 each level was extracted it Was sub-' sub-' statitiaiiy timbored, until now a series of regularly timtjered galleries having ; sucrlieial surfaces averaging perhaps l,s.nj .-.uare feet, extend from the ; tunnel level to the bottom of the old i workings. The timbering done under the superintendence of Mr. Mathews, is a tine piece of workmanship, durable and strong enough to impress one with a perfect sens.: of security. From the upper galleries or floors the ore! 'is conveyed to the lower one I : by" means of a shute, and is: j thence taken in cars on trans-1 verse tracks to the main track leading out of tho tunnel. Another level, the' : ninth, is in proeesss of being opened! above, and a whim has been erected j I to hoi.-t ore from beneath the tunnel j i level. In both of these new exeava-i i tions, the quality and quantity of the I ore continues the same as in the work- ed levels. I CHARACTER OF ORES. From the fact that all the ores taken from the Kmma are shipped to Europe! for reduction by smelting process, the1 impre.-sion prevails that they carry a1 large percentage of lead and can only! lie reduced by smelting. I understand j that the average percentage of lead in! these ores is iess than in the ores at ldoche. which are not only worked raw ! by mill-process, but are worked up to I ninety per cent, of their a.-say value, I and at a cost of fc'o per ton. The cost of the tran-poriation of ore from the ; F.mnia mine to Swansea, England, is : j $od per ton., and when it is recollected that no ores are mined that will! not pay a protit above this high price ' ot treiglit ana tne cost ot mining and reduction, and that in all mines the quantity of second and third exceeds the quantity of li.st class ores, it is evident that there must be in this mine an immense quantity of ores which might be, but are not, profitably reduced re-duced hero. Even from the debris of the mine a large amount of bullion might be extracted by mill process at a protit, and the lower grade lead ores, too poor to ship, might be reduced at our home smelting works. Yours, Wasatch. |
