Show Pike. Yesterday the building on the hill north of East Temple street, known as the Arsenal, was burned to the ground. There was iu it a wagon, some harness, tallow hides, scraps and other re-idue of animals, it having been Used for some time as the slaughterhouse slaughter-house for the public works, worth iu all probably a thousand dollars, which were destroyed with the building. It is believed (he tire commeiu'ed in the second storey, for the character of the material on the ground floor was such that it would have smouldered for hours before bui-Miny, into flame. There is no doubt but the lire was the work of an incendiary. Two men in the employ em-ploy of M'essrs. Walker Bro's. coming from the powder mugamo of that firm with a wagon luad of powder, saw a man inside the fence take off bis coat and c'-eop into the building through a window, and soon after saw the smoke iv-uing from it, which one of them at first supposed was caused by smoking hams, he knowing it was used as a slaughter house. They sub-enuently saw the same man going from the building, and in a short time after it was wrapped in flames. A- the structure was not the property of a private ciiizcn, the incendiarism could not be prompted by private and personal per-sonal malice. The matter will bear examination. There is an opinion prevailiug among some people that it was done by ome per-on who supposed sup-posed there were anus and powder inside, in an attempt to destroy them. A- :c were going to press la-t night ie learned that the person who had lred the building was under arrest. He .s a crazy man. named Henry Quayle, isiding iu the Till ward, who as racked by an Indian I oy, uud admit- j ed having done it. I |
