Show I HOTEL AND CORRIDOR I Lr j = Wainwrieht Parish is not the name of i some Louisiana township although it might seem so to one familiar with I i George G Cables delicate little creole romances The young gentleman who is I I fortunate enough ouns own so dramatic an i identity was at the Knutsford yesterday j but is now on the way to Japan where he expects to gather notes for an I Oriental study of grotesque Nippon art to be utilized in aesthetic wall decoration I will be a fad by this time next year for the multiwealthy to surprise the artistic eye by sprinkling upon its dsc from every obscure corner of a chastely executed chamber some oddly shaped panel giving a vivid Impression of Japanese Japan-ese landscape gardens a bit of water or some quaint woodland without a suggestion sug-gestion of life A panel disfigured by manor man-or fowl would utterly poi the antique 1 conceit which Walnwrlght Parish intends I to make fashionable Mr Parish is an artist whose sketches of still life I have I been admired several seasons back by visitors to the American Academy of Fine Arts His style rather suggested to I Aubrey Beardsley the demoniac antagonism antagon-ism of color affected bv the London poster man but Mr Parish never got near the excrutlating dilemmas of color into which Mr Beardsleys gibbering imagination led him The American artists work was the direct inspiration of Japanese perspective per-spective and tinting specially a tnt instead in-stead o a color The art of tinting then rather than coloring was what has distinguished dis-tinguished Mr Parishs work < te He has conceived the idea of wall decoration with sudden surprises of panel ing in the midst or deep maroons velvet like browns and opalescent blues A I dead wall executed in an unvarvlng ebony with frail gold lattice working is one of the daring decorations proposed but more I startling than all would be a panel In an upper corner below the gilt cornice the panel a hypothenuse form containing a Japanese garden with turreted pagoda in I rustic brown and the landscape a vivid blending of green and pink Again in a diagonal direction In a lower corner just above an ebony wainscoating a sheet of water with a skiff floating idly by the barge piled sumptuously with a Japanese poppy of blood red and some stringed I instrument unite amid the fragrance the general tone being a marine purple the foliage of faint green and the barge ivory white with Its scarlet freightage This was one idea given by Mr Parish and serves to impart somewhat of a glimpse of his proposed fad He will spend almost eight months In the Islands and then return by way of London Mr Parish will inaugurate his reform in New York the wearied spot of all new isms a r < e Mrs C Lyons Miss N C Lyons anti Miss E B Lyons of
