Show LOAN OFFICE FRAUDS I t Hyde n Man With Many Aliases Indicted The federal grand jury yesterday presented an indictment against S W Hyde whose frauds were exposed In The Herald a few days ago Hyde took flight a short time ago and the authorities here have advices of his arrest in Kansas from here he will be returned to Utah to answer the wi charges against him The indictment charges that S W Hyde alias Sylvester Hicks alias W H Hamilton alias George V Sumner whose other and true name to the grand jury is unknown on April 3 1S97 at Ogden City did devise C scheme and artifice to defraud certain persons to the grand jury unknown bv sending through the postofllce the following fol-lowing letter We want some good I responsible party at your place who can send us some good applications for loans Are you in a positffm to act yu n positin for UL I so we would be glad to hear from you and to know your references refer-ences We are making loans on mining min-ing and city property also make loans for building purposes We are willing to allow you a cash commission of 4 per cent on all loans you may send us at 12 per cent annual interest and I 3 per cent on all 9 per cent and 10 percent I per-cent loans We do not make any loans I ftr a shorter time than six months but W6 will make loans on six months to three years time allowing the borrower bor-rower privilege to pay any part of the principal at any Interest paying time We charge all borrowers a fee of 10 for the investigation of their titles and r > ii > inG for recording the trust deed given us to secure the loan We can close a loan in 10 or 25 days after we receive the application We send you I herewith a few of our blanks and If you have any business in sight we i would be glad to have you send it in Yours truly S W HYDE Manager The indictment says that Hyde represented rep-resented no loaning company and had no money to lend and that the letter was a scheme to induce persons to send him the 10 mentioned as a charge for examining the titles to proposed securities se-curities and that Hyde appropriated the same to his own use and rendered no value for i I is charged that on < April 3 he mailed at Ogden such a com rrunication directed Loan Agent Butte Mont that on April 1 he mailed mail-ed another to S A Taylor Butte City Mont and on April 6 one to F Collo den Bozeman Mont contrary to the statute in such cases made and uro i vided and against the peace and di = nity of the United States of America hyde found I conducive to his scheme to use many aliases while con ducting his false agencies in different oMes Some of these fictitious titles by which the inspectors have traced the man all over the United States were W H Hamilon Sylveser Hicks James L Lay Gear W Sumner Charles Glaspia W T Svlveser One of the singular characteristics of his plan was that he gave various aliases in different rts O the country as references He would then order I mail inquiries forwarded to him under the name of the alias that suited the I particular case answering the inquiry himself and invariably giving himself a character I was through the pursuance pur-suance of such methods by which the United States postal laws were vio lated tat enabled the inspectors to better trace him Hyde was caught at Wichita Kan where he had again opened a business known as the Western Loan Agency |
