Show l NAVAL REORGANIZATION 1 r t so Admiral Schley 1rr1Y Command the l Wl111e Pacific Fleet Sf New York Aug 20A dispatch to I 1 tJ I t J the Tribune from Washington says The navy department has taken under consideration the reorganization of the I North Atla itic fleet which now in cjudes five fleet officers in addition to Providing duty for the commanderstof a large number of vessels which will be placed out of commission in the next two or three weekS When the force Is reduced at least three of the flag officers offic-ers Ol the home station will be rendEred ren-dEred superfiuous and are to be ordered or-dered toother assignments When Admiral Sampson and Schley come to Washington next week pre paritory to going to Cuba and Porto Rico members of the military commissions com-missions they will be consulted regard I in the proposed changes and in all provability arrangements satisfactory to them will result It is considered likely that the North Atlantic station will be divided and one flag officer probably Admiral Sampson retained in command of the home fleet while Admiral Schley or Admiral Howell How-ell will be placed in charge of a newlY organized squadron of the West Indies In-dies limited by the Gulf of Mexico and the CarIbbean sea It is the impression among naval officers that Admiral Schley will seize the opportunity to secure command of the Pacific squadron on the retirement l of AdmirAl Miller on Nov 22 and will be content to wait ashore the few I weeks between the termination of his I services on the Porto Rican command and Admiral Millers retirement which I would enable him to have an important impor-tant command perhaps more important i impor-tant than that of the Vest Indies as I it includes the whole Pacific ocean from Alaska to Cape Horn as well as Hawaii and Samoa Commodore Rem commanding the I naval base at Key West is expected to succeed Admiral Matthews as president of the examining and retiring boards who retired Oct 24 I The department has made no move I up to this time toward the reestablishment reestablish-ment of the European or South Atlantic At-lantic stations and it is improbable that any ships will be sent to the latter territory before next year However if no complications arise during thc sessions ses-sions of the peace commissioners at 1 Paris and they succeed in reaching an early agreement on the terms of the I convention Commodore Watson is expected ex-pected to take a fine fleet to Europe and after visits of courtesy to England and France may spend the winter in I he Mediterranean I |
