Show I OVERIIORS RE EMJJ FROM DESIGNATING REGIMENTS TO BE ffZISTERED OUT List Will Be Made Public This Week Volunteers at Presidio Want toGo to-Go Home Washington Aug 20The secretary of war received a number of telegrams tele-grams from the governors of various states in regard to the proposed reduction reduc-tion of the army In the majority of cases the governors suggest regiments of their states which may be mustered out among the first but there are 5ev eral cases where the governors say that certain of their state troops are cx ceedungly desIrous of remaining in the military service and taking part in any further campaign The secretary of war is preparing a list of regiments which shall be mustered mus-tered out first under the present plan of reducing the army by 75000 or 100 000 men It is probable this list will be made public next eek by which time it is hoped to have the matter flnali determined The First Ohio infantry attached to the Fourth army corps at Fernandina has been ordered to Jacksonville and attached to the Seventh army corps under un-der Major General Loud This action is taken at the request of the regiment with a view to their employment in thef army to be sent to Havana lii the f The Second regiment of infantry h5 requested that it be assigned to duty with the army of occupation in Cuba According to ft communication re 4 ceived at the war department today a majority of the members of the Fifth Kentucky infantry at Chickamauga are in favor of the mustering out of that regiment WANT TO GO HOME Voluuteers Send Petitions to Ba Mustered Out San Francisco Aug 20The men of almost every one of the volunteer regiments reg-iments are sending petitions to the see retary of war requesting that they be mustered out of the service There are very few of the officers with whom this movement has any countenance and efforts are being made to suppress it In the Twentieth Kansas regiment the suppression of one petition by tbe officers led only to a more vigorous one being placed on foot Ninetyseven men in one company have signed the pet tion and all the other companies of the regiment have a large showing Several men in the Seventh California volunteers have started a similar petition peti-tion with a much smaller number of names however and the First Washington Wash-ington volunteers have drafted an appeal ap-peal to Secretary Alger begging for relekse from military duties To Be Mustered Out Washington Aug 20The orders ig the case of the First regiment of the Illinois troops have been changed a to provide that they shall proceed Fort Sheridan hIs instead of + o Springfield as originally contemplated These tropps will be mustered out in a few weeks Colored Troopers Arrive New York Aug 20The transport Rio Grande arrived at Montauk Point this morning and anchored off shore to wait for the health officer of the camp She has men of the Ninth and Tenth cavalry onboard |
