Show UNSETTLEDALL DAY i t Frequent Rallies and Recessions II the Stocks FRACTIONAL GAINS ONLY WITH A FA SPHINKLING OF L LOSSES Sugar Lost Heavy By Season of Steps Taken By the Government to Qualify a a Bidder I K P The Bond Market Made a Becord New York Dec 8The stock market t ooened this morning with a tremendous sF show of animation and vigorous upward tendency gains being uniform pretty II much through the Ust I was evident I that the strength displayed by the market I mar-ket yesterday had brought orders to the commission houses to buy stocks There was also buying for London account for the first time in several days the advance in prices here apparently failing to tempt arbitrage brokers to sell Their purchases of St faul were on quite a large scale and they also bought Union Pacific but tnere were sales of Louisville and Atchi con for London account SUGAR LOST Sugar was the one exception in the strength of the market at the opening but its loss soon widened and heavy liuuidation in the stock set in offerings being very heavy and active support being be-ing of no avail to recover its losses Yesterdays Yes-terdays rumor of an extra dividend was thoroughly discredited this morning and yesteraays gain was consequently com pletelv wiped out before the announcement announce-ment of the regular dlvidenu The stock was very feverish all day and fluctuated widely and frequently but worked con l stantir towards a lower level and closed near the lowest at a net loss of 4 Total sales were 120000 shares MARKET UNSETTLED Consolidated Gas was also a mark for the reactionists and dropped at one time 4t ½ points The consequence was that the market was kept unsettled all day When the general advance came to a Eton dullness intervened and there were frequent rallies Early in the final hour prices of many stocks were at the best but the final drop In Sugar again weakened weak-ened prices all around and left gains confined con-fined to tractions in almost all cases and l a fair sprinkling of losses all through the lst Union Pacific was heavy on account ac-count of the steps taken by the government govern-ment to qualify as a bidder at the Kunsas Pacific sale rev BOND uARKET ACTIVE The activity displayed by the bond market was quite remarkable for the first hour approaching one and three i quarters million dollars in par value and It is said breaking the record for one bours business There was some decrease de-crease In activity later in the day but the prices of a number of bonds of the midale grade moved up from one to several points Some of the high grade bonds showed I heavy gains Total sales 4250000 Old 4 s registered declined and old 4 s coupon i bid but the 5s rose bid the new 4s coupon sold at 129 which is higher than ever progressed The chisf Incentive to buy came from the further fur-ther decrease In the deliveries in the northwest and though other bullish news came in during the day this proved the main sustaining factor throughout For the first time short In December showed real anxiety December opened at 99c or c above yesterdays close A little selling by the bull clique sufficed to put the price back to SSc but an hour later an attempt to buy a low lots put the price to 31 very quickly The interest in the op ton did not then die out as it did yesterday yester-day More buying orders came in after alight a-light reaction which put the price to St 101 Again the bull crowd let go but for the rest of the day December showed an affection for the dollar mark There was good action In the May price also due party to the bidding up of December party due to bull influences Chicago receipts re-ceipts were 256 cars compared with 27 cars last year but there arc extraordinary inducements being offered to bring ad-mitted however that the mills are grind I Ing up the raw material very fast All I things considered the actual amount must be pretty nearly if not quite at the I rate of 600000000 pounds per year Such a showing affords great encouragement I to tho wool trade and the predictions are I still rife that prices will not long hence I be fully on a level with those of Oct 1 Ilt is Increasingly difficult to speak of ac oJ I tual prices in this market the quotations I are unchanged and while an intensely I Jhle al intense dull market always raises the presump ton of concessions i would be difficult to put ones finger on actual markdowns at this time As a matter of fact thera are hardly buyers Enough around tobreak the market There has been a big falling off in the sale of Australian
