Show I NO BIDDERS Contractors Not Anxious to Bid on City Work For reasons that are readily apparent contractors of sewer construction have not seen fit to bid on the work of the proposed Third East sewer lateral The extension is to run the length of only one block from South Temple to First South street and those who contemplated bidding took into consideration that less than a carload of pipe would be rewired re-wired The successful bidder would not find it profitable to order less than a car I load and to ship an entire car of pipe from Denver would leave a surnlns to use which advantageously on a subsequent subse-quent contract would be somewhat prob iQmatical These considerations had the effect of deterrIng contractors from putting put-ting in bids for the work and when the board of public works met yesterday to receive and open proposals none came to the surface A SOLUTION OF THE QUESTION These circumstances will be reported to the city council together with a recommendation recom-mendation that the city buy a carload or more of the required pipe and call for bids for the labor and lesser essentials so that the Third East street property owners may not be disappointed in their desires to connect their homes with the sewer Formerly the city kept pipe on nand for short sewer extensions and contracted for the work only and this plan was demonstrated to be economical and satisfactory in nearly every instance SOME DEFECTIVE PIPE Work upon the L street extension is progressing satisfactorily although City Engineer Kelsey found it necessary to reject a portion of the last shipment of Denver pipe sold to Contractor Parry Several sections of the alleged defective tubing made of clay vitrified have become be-come the property of the city engineer t > y purchase and these with others exhibits ex-hibits of condemned pipe make quite an array in exhibit in a store room at the joint building |
