Show THE GREAT ISSUE The great issue of the day is the financial question The present house of representatives which is overwhelmingly overwhelm-ingly Republican attempted to make the issue protection and for this purpose pur-pose introduced a rather mild tariff measure calling it by the soft name of an emergency revenue bill But the attempt has not succeeded It was put forth as a feeler and has served its purpose It has been discovered that the financial question will not down that all others are subordinate to it and will so remain until it is solved There may be bond issues and there may be revenue bills but they afford no solution of the problem that must be solved Each will view the great problem according to his own light but in the west and many of the states of the south the whole trouble is viewed as coming from the demonetization silver sil-ver and the determination on the part of the moneyed interests to force upon the country the single gold standard Those who are doing this never tire of telling the people there Is an abundance of gold that all that is lacking is confidence confi-dence The confidence is lacking surely and the abundance of gold Is not seen Why talk such stuff as this to the people peo-ple The statement of the proposition carries its own refutation It is possible possi-ble that the people will not vote for free silver next November but in no other way can they vote an assured prosperity Two theories of money will con1ront them One that of a metallic money based on gold and silver There is mo promise behind that for it needs none The other a bank currency based on gqvernment bonds which government gov-ernment bonds are nothing but a promise prom-ise to pay at a future time metallic II money to the holders of them This 1 i form of money is but a promise to pay the security fpr which is the governments I govern-ments promise to pay If the government govern-ment cannot now secure metallic money I is it at all likely that it can do it more easily twenty < sr thirty years hence with all the bad effects cfiZ demonetiza tion increasing rather than diminishing diminish-ing ingThe The great issue will soon be formally before the people and they will through I the ballot be the architects of their own 1 fortune May they act wisely I |
