Show FUNERAL OF MRS WELLS ELLSJ J It Occurred Yesterday Afternoon With Impressive Services ADDRESSES BY BISHOP WHITNEY WHIT-NEY AND JOS F SMITH Brothers of the Deceased Lady Act as I Pallbearers State and City Officials I cials and Other Prominent Citizens Citi-zens Present I Surrounded by a large company nt I sorrowing relatives and friends the remains re-mains of the late Mrs Heber M Wells wife of the governor were laid away I yesterday at the city cemetery S The funeral services were held from the governors residence and there asa as-a very large attendance of relatives and sympathetic friemls The companj filled the interior of the residence and a large assembly which covered the lawn in front sa beneath a large canvas can-vas spread which extended to the sidewalk side-walk Many who were unable to gain entrance remained on the outside and with heads bared to the sun lined the sidewalk adjoining the residence I was a demonstration of respect and esteem for the governor and his late wife such as has seldom been seen in Salt Lake Only the intimate friends and relatives listened tq the simple services ser-vices which were held on the inside but the concourse without remained patiently until the last rites preceding the interment were concluded The cortege which followed the dark shrouded hearse to the cemetery was over two squares in length and i was almost fi oclock when they arived at the place of interment The services were conducted after the simple manner man-ner of the Mormon formula and were conducted by Elder Robert Patrick one of the bishopric of the Eighteenth ward In which the deceased wife of the governor resided A profusion of flowers covered the casket and numerous garlands and wreaths were apparent on all sides Many men of prominence were in attendance at-tendance including the three justices of the supreme court and the state officials cials Among the many others present were Apostle John Henry Smith Mayor James Glendinning Hon James Sharp Hon Henry W Lawrence Elder John and Nicholson General John Q Cannon Mr and Mrs Harold Russell and many state and city officials 1 The musical features were conducted by a quartette consisting of Messrs I H G Whitney Heber Goddard Jonn D Spencer and R C Easton The services were begun with a solo by R C i Easton Vhen the Swallows Homeward I Home-ward Fly and after prayer by Eider Patrick he sang with pathos and sentiment senti-ment Mrs Eliza R Snows 0 My Father Bishop Orson F Whitney made the first address He referred to the endearing en-dearing qualities of the deceased and spoke of the consolation which was to be found in the fact that her life had been exemplary and her belief In and devotion to Christ always steadfast The search of philosophers in all times he said has been for truth but they have been unable to find it of their own wisdom Joseph Smith gave the most comprehensive definition of truth when he said that it is the knowledge knowl-edge of things as they are as they have been and as they will be In the partial par-tial knowledge of these things wnich the Latterday Saints possess through revelation is their consolation in such snevoua trials as this They have found what the philosophers sought in vain to discover the object of the existence ex-istence of man This probation is merely mere-ly a second estate a schoolmaster ivhich perfects the soul for the future state The world has been described as a narrow vale between two eternities If ive could scale the mountain heights ind see the glories which are revealed in I the dim vista the visitation of death could not be looked upon as such a crushing calamity There is a habitation habita-tion beyond the mountains for souls vhlch are chaste and beautiful Mrs Wells was beautiful he con inued in more ways than one She vas beautiful to look upon and beautl ul in soul She performed her mission mis-sion admirably and with an amiability vhlch was never absent The concluding address was delivered jy President Joseph F Smith who spoke of the glories of the resurrection ind the certainty of a future state of lisa to those who remained faithful During the intermission between the iermons Mr Goddard sang the solo I Need Thee Every Hour and after j he concluding prayer by Apostle John 3enry Smith Not Dead but Sleep ng was given by the quartette The casket was then conveyed to the icarse and the company entered the I ong line of carriages which were In valting The pallbearers were Messrs jpencer Ciawson Rudger Clawson S I 3 Clawson Stanley Clawson Fred lawson and Selden Clawson all broth irs
