Show 18 l ijuml r FALSE L I The Tribune Grossly MisRepresents Mis-Represents Chairman Dunbars Position NEVER PROPOSED FUSION I STORY DENTED BY BOTH DUN BAR AIID PARSONS No foundation For the Statements MadeRepublicans Want to Fuse But the Democrats Decline Ward Conventions Tonight Populists Are Active Meetings Held In Forest DaleOther Political News of the Day Yesterdays issue of the Salt Lake Tribune the mouthpiece of fhe so called nonpartisan party the silk stocking aggregation which is seeking to obtain control of the city contained a leading local article which In substance sub-stance states that Chairman Dunbar of the city Democratic committee had made overtures to the chairman of the Republican city committee looking toward a fusion of the two parties for tie purpose of defeating the ticket nominated at the Deseret National Bank The nrl2cl headed Duntur is Frightened Republican Aid Sought by Democrats A Proposition to Parsons Par-sons Plan to Divide Offices and Name a BIPartisan Ticket in Order if Possible Pos-sible to Defeat the Candidates of the Citizens Party Democratic Confidence in Success Does Not Exist in Truth The story relates that a day or two ago Chairman Dunbar made overtures to Chairman Parsons for a union of forces against the common enemy of partisan politics in municipal affairs and suggested that a ticket might be nominated which would prevail over the silk stocking ticket That Dunbar suggested that one party might have the mayor and the ether the majority in the council That Parsons listened to all this and so forth and so forth and so forth Now for deliberate untruth this anecdote takes the entire bakery An anias in his palmiest days could never have worked off a story like that To begin with Ananias lacked the imagination imagin-ation to concoct a yarn such as the above and besides Ananias lied for ivhat there was in it while the writer of the Tribune story must have been practicing for his health and just to see what he could do when he got Started There was no foundation in fact for the tale to begin with It rested upon nothing and no attempt was made to verify it Neither Chairman Chair-man Dunbar nor Chairman Parsons were seen in connection with it and neither had a chance to affirm or deny the statements It looks on the face of it as though the story WaS inspired in the office of the Tribune where the WISh Which is father to many thoughts is constantly begetting political roor backs for tihe purpose of enhancing the interests of the bankers a ega Ion for which it elands sponsor DUNBAKS DECXIAL Chairman Dunbar said yesterday that there was not a word of truth in the statement Some days ago he said Parsons came to my office and asked I if he could have a word In private wIth me I told Him Where was nothing private pri-vate In my office and that we could talk the matter over whatever it was right there at the counter and we did He asked me continued Dunbar if the two parties could not combine and defeat de-feat the nonpartisans I told him I did not see a feasible plan that the moment we attempted to form a bipartisan I bi-partisan aggregation we abandoned the principles of our party and went into in-to a fight for spoils only I also told I him that I did not think the Democratic Demo-cratic party wanted to abandon its fight on principle for the purpose of obtaining the spoils of office that its I members would prefer to make a man ly battle and go down to an honorable defeat than to enter into a combination I of that kind In additIon to this I told Mr Parsons that I was but one member of tlhe party and of the committee and thaw I did not speaic for the committee or tilts party that I had no right to That if the convention wanted to enter tote I a coaiiQon of that kind 4t could but my views were antagonisttSc to any sticih couirsa So far as my going to Mr Parsons I ansi moOring a proposition said Mr Dunfeur I never have and < there fo no reason why tIbIa stncy rung up called out ot bed lentiLs me to believe that at the time toey were talking to me they had this story the Had they wanted to verify it they could have dome so but they dU not and that is all these is to at The publication of the stuff is scandalous and shows an utter lack of fairness tun the part of the Tribune In the matter PARSONS DENIES ALSO Mr Parsons denies that he ever toil iBie to formulate a declaration of principles and an address to the public pub-lic The meeting did not complete the task and will hold another session this evening While nothing leaked out last evening of a very tangible nature it is generally understood that the sentence We denounce the extravagant methods of the present city council etc was opposed because it might hurt Romney and Calllster who have
