has been said anent the matter it is a fact that another election is rapidly approaching in this city viz the selection of five school trustees or members of the city board of education to take the places which will be made vacant by the expiration of the terms of John J Thomas of the First municipal ward W F Colton of the Second George J Bywater of the Third Mr Woolley of the Fourth and John E Booth of the Fifth II This election will be held on the first Wednesday of next month and up to date there has been no preparation by I either of the two parties in the city looking toward the nomination for any of the candidates The selection of members of the board is the most important I portant action the people of the city are called upon to take inasmuch a I the education of children is one of the potent factors in securing good govern ment Inquiry in political circles yesterday developed the fact that there are absolutely ab-solutely no candidates in the field unless un-less perchance some of the present incumbents have a hankering to hold hankering I over and this could not be ascertained definitely Chairman Dooly said he was not a candidate for reelection as reelecton a a member having had glory enough I is likely that Mr Colton would be pleased to succeed himself as he is greatly interested in school work The laymen of the Republican party smarting under the defeat received at the late election are now talking of a nonpartisan nomination for members of the board That the city is hopelessly hope-lessly Democratic is conceded and they would gain a standing in the board if all parties would unite and select candidates can-didates without regard to partisanship I The Democrats however may not consent con-sent to this I is high time that some action was taken by the Democratic city committee commit-tee looking toward calling ward conventions con-ventions for the selection of candidates and this statement of conditions will doubtless cause action in the immediate immedi-ate future I may not be out of cTrder at this time to state there is a feeling among Democrats toward electing some ladies I a members Women with a fitness for the work are desirable members of an educational board inasmuch as they usually show an energy in the work which assists materially in forwarding educational interests I educatona interest I v v < > A morning 01 so ago Harry Joseph set up a wall through the Tribune concerning I con-cerning a call or so made upon him by his successor in office I appears that Mr Wilkes has been so rash as I to appear in the office since his election elec-tion all of which agitates Harry to a I degree I is stated that on and after the 4th of January the office will be open to the public t > 1 > < > S A Kenner memberelect of the next house of representatives is a very I funny fellow when he gets started Yesterday this paper published the statement of his campaign expenses a I it has all of those filed up to date I ivenner read I and seized with a sudden sud-den inspiration he penciled the following follow-ing which will be perused with interest inter-est by those who know what it is torn to-rn for office To the Editor I is very gratifying to see that the little items of my campaign expense account ac-count are of so much moment that you and your crosscorner contemporary publish them in full with side remarks of less character a more or explanatory ter This all goes to show that our forefathers did not fight bleed and die in vain I I had only thought of it in time the interest which the public evidently evi-dently feels in such publications might have been rendered still more absorbing absorb-ing by a few items like the following Bought Herald from newsboy to inJluence fathers vote 05 Ditto mothers Vote 05 Gave Hon William Nixon to get shoes shined 10 Treated the crowd because of birth in the family 65 Paper of pins to get points from for speeches in Bingham 10 Gave boy at Bingham to show me how they washed out gold after fully explaining to him that I was a candidate 25 Inspiration for speech at Frog Hollow Hol-low very poorthat is the inspiration in-spiration 25 Candy for kids at Duckpond Center all having voting relatives 40 Gave boy at Goose Creek with understanding un-derstanding that he was to tell his parents about it and that I was a candidate 05 Subscription to Sunday school picnic f pic-nic in our ward candidacy previously pre-viously explained 10 I Several other things not sold1 75 I am not entirely satisfied that even this is absolutely correct but it is much nearer so than the one you published pub-lished yesterday and will no doubt serve to appease somewhat the morbid yearning on the part of the public which the first publication created I may be suggested to you that an item debited to the county committee would look very well in the tabulated stat ment and perhaps this is right but if the said C C could cause me to lose several or more votes with no contribution contri-bution at alf what might it have done if I had given it 10 or so In other words why should a fellow give money to those who do all they can without coming out openly to defeat him Tours quite muchS S A KENNER Lately and Still a Candidate P SThe foregoing interrogations are merely questions not in quetons any sense campaign contributions They are not designed to reflect on the position of United States marshal are not so plentiful as they might be but those who are rushing rush-ing around with petitions might just as well hold their peace and save their labor The major that no advertising will be necessary to fill the places in all the offices is in order at this time 000 Since The Herald announced that several consulships would be given to Utah the faithful have
