Christian Temperance Union met in annual convention conven-tion this morning Nearly 2COO delegates and visitors were present when Miss Frances Willard called the conventon to order The executive committee recommended that the W C T U begin a rcte crusade aganst the evils of gamblng and the committee on legislation was authorized to take measures toward the abolition of gambling After the usual committees were appointed Frances E Willard addressed the convention She spoke of the heroines of the rank and te file who had borne and labored and had patience when the W C T L rassed under the rod of a natons criticism We have marched far since then and alignments of parties have changed The labor movement has taken on proportions so vast that none can speak Uzhtly of it any more At the beginning of the afternoon session ses-sion President Willard introduced to the convention Mrs R Mitchell of Id ho with congratulatory words for the success suc-cess of the suffrage in that state The afternoon was almost entirely devoted de-voted to reading reports including those vote reprts of Corresponding Secretary Mrs Katherine Kathe-rine L Stevenson of Massachusetts and Treasurer Helen M Baker of Illinois Among the other reports presented were those of the following superintendents of departments ot deprtmens Mrs Hannah J Bailey Maine Peace of International Arbitration Miss Marie C Brehan Illinois Franchise Fran-chise oissl Margaret B Ellis New Jersey Jrelh f BEl Legislation and Enforcement of the Law Mrs Mary D Tomlinson New Jersey Parlor Meetings Purity Mrs Mary Wood Allen Michigan Mrs Mary F Lovell Pennsylvania Mercy Mrs Josephine Bateham Kentucky Sabbath Observance During the afternoon session the order of business was flnaKy suspended to accept ac-cept by a rising vote the annual address of President Willard The various reports were received with appause and then accepted by the cons con-s and ordered printed in the annual an-nual report The auditor certified to the correctness of the treasurers report The evening sesson was presided over by Mrs L M N Stevenson of Maine viceresldent at large The devotional exercises were conducted con-ducted by Mrs J K Barney of Rhode Island No business was transacted the evening welcome being devoted to addresses of The audience was asked to contribute to the finances of the union and a generous gener-ous sum was have been larger than for several years before Ao propriations to superintendents and for aU lines of work were greatly increased at the beginning of the year over anv previous year yet we bring to the contention I con-tention after all bills are paid a very I encouraging balance Whe many states have made a gain In membership only seven have jrpined over 500 new members and will shire in benefit night These states are Massachusetts Massa-chusetts Maryland e Jersey Louisiana Louisi-ana Michigan Virginia and Kentucky The total receipts of the year have been I 2770813 the total expenditures
