Show THE CASE OHG BOWEN Dismissal of the Ward Teacher Creates I Cre-ates Much Comment I DIFFERENCE OF OPINION I CONSIDERABLE IIGNATION OVER THE ACTION TAT The Church People However Sus tain ItMr Bowen laJakes a Correction Cor-rection of His Affidavit Comments Com-ments of the Deseret News Th publication in yesterdays Herald Her-ald of the article referring to the deposing de-posing of James Charles Bowen a member of the First ward branch of the Mormon church from the position exercised his of a teacher for having exercise rights as a citizen at Wednesdays school board election in a manner that displeased his bishop was the subject of much discussion yesterday among politicians and churchmen Opinions varied on the cause and effect of the sensational incident according to the I standpoint from whjgh tbe attendant circumstances were vjewed On the one hand the action of Bishop War burton was justified by those well versed in matters of church policy while those holding adverseviews condemned con-demned the act of disciplining an elder for the zeal he displayed as a citizen in working around the polls for the candidates of his choice as a flagrant interference with the rights of a citizen and ani outrageous exer ctzen cise of ecclesiastical authority ONE SLIGHT MODIFICATION Mr Bowen stands by his affidavit as published with one modification on one not very material point The modification in the affidavit which Mr Bowen desires to be as publicly announced an-nounced as the original recital refers to the statement that a motion was made by Bishop Warburton to dismiss him from his position a teacher and that the motion prevailed by an uplifted up-lifted hand vote The deponent after attending recovering from the excitement recov rng tending his dismissal remembered that the motion had not been made nor voted upon The bishop merely announced his decision of dismissal However the manner of voting is customary in similar matters of I church procedure although as regards the teachers they are appointed and dismissed by the bishop DESERET NEWS COMMENTS Commenting upon th Bowen episode the Deseret News last evening stated that all Bishop Warburton did was to release the offending elder from his duties as an acting teacher until such time as the matter the charge that Bowen deceived his brethren and sisters sis-ters in the church by handing the wrong ticket on election day could be cleared up The official organ of the church further declares In the case of Mr Bowen there was no expulsion from a quorum and that the action is not in any sense punishment Toward the qlose of its article the News makes this reassuring declaration declara-tion tonStl more the Mormons themselves in this instance as so many others I have shown that they disapprove of I the use of ecclesiastical positions for political purposes I Mr Bowen still retains his membership member-ship in the church Regarding the rump ticket in the Fifth ward the statement that it originated with Mormons is strenuously strenu-ously denied by leading men of the church there They also assert that the only Mormons who worked against the convention ticket supporting the one on which McMaster was substituted substi-tuted for Baldwin were men who were not present at the convention |
